Twelve hours before a solar grahan and nine before a lunar one, to its end, only where it is seen
What North Indian households keep, as tradition. Never look at the Sun directly, even in part eclipse: use eclipse glasses or a pinhole.
A solar grahan comes on an Amavasya, when the Moon passes in front of the Sun; a lunar grahan on a Purnima, when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. It happens only when the new or full Moon is near Rahu or Ketu, the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s: the Puranas tell it as Rahu, the asura who drank the amrit at the samudra manthan, swallowing the Sun or the Moon in revenge.
On Monday 2 August 2027, a Surya Grahan. The sutak is kept for it.
5: annular solar eclipse on 6 February 2027, penumbral lunar eclipse on 21 February 2027, penumbral lunar eclipse on 18 July 2027, total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027, penumbral lunar eclipse on 17 August 2027. 1 of them is seen in India with sutak.
On Saturday 6 February 2027. Not seen anywhere in India, so no sutak is kept here and the day’s muhurats stand. Elsewhere on Earth the annular solar eclipse runs from 6:27 PM to 12:31 AM on 7 Feb IST.
On Sunday 21 February 2027. Only the Earth’s faint outer shadow (the penumbra) falls on the Moon, which dims a little and is hard to tell apart. The panchangs keep no sutak for it, and the day’s muhurats stand.
No. Only the Earth’s faint outer shadow touches the Moon, and the panchangs keep no sutak for it.
Sutak, Rahu Kaal and the day’s muhurats for where you are.
Today’s panchang
