Grahan
Surya grahan 17 February 2026
annular solar eclipse, was not seen in India
This grahan has passed. Not seen anywhere in India, so no sutak is kept here and the day’s muhurats stand. Elsewhere on Earth the annular solar eclipse runs from 3:26 PM to 7:57 PM IST.
Is it seen, and when
Times in India (IST)
It falls in Kumbh (Aquarius) rashi, Dhanishta nakshatra.
No sutak for this one
Sutak is kept only where a grahan is seen, and not for a penumbral lunar grahan. On this day the kitchen, the temple and the day’s muhurats carry on as usual. The next grahan seen in India is the Chandra Grahan of Tuesday 3 March 2026.
The grahan across the Earth
IST
| Stage | Time (IST) |
|---|---|
| Begins anywhere on Earth | 3:26 PM |
| The ring (annularity) begins on its central path | 5:13 PM |
| Greatest eclipse | 5:41 PM |
| The ring (annularity) ends on its central path | 6:11 PM |

For a solar grahan these are the times for the Earth as a whole; no city in India sees any of it.
Which rashi it falls in, from yours
In Kumbh, Dhanishta nakshatra
Households whose Moon rashi is Kumbh (Aquarius), or whose birth nakshatra is Dhanishta, take the most care: tradition asks them not to look at the grahan and to spend it in japa.

Why a grahan happens
A solar grahan comes on an Amavasya, when the Moon passes in front of the Sun; a lunar grahan on a Purnima, when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. It happens only when the new or full Moon is near Rahu or Ketu, the two points where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s: the Puranas tell it as Rahu, the asura who drank the amrit at the samudra manthan, swallowing the Sun or the Moon in revenge.

Common questions
Is the 17 February 2026 Surya grahan seen in India?
No. It happens while the Sun or Moon is below India’s horizon, so there is no sutak here.
Which rashi and nakshatra is the 17 February 2026 grahan in?
Kumbh rashi (Aquarius) and Dhanishta nakshatra.
Is sutak kept for a grahan not seen in India?
No. A grahan that cannot be seen from a place carries no sutak there, and a penumbral chandra grahan carries none anywhere.
