Daylight splits into eight and night into eight, so a choghadiya is about ninety minutes in summer and shorter in winter. The two are not equal to each other. On a short winter day the day parts are shorter than the night parts.
Each part has a planet, in a fixed cycle
Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Mars — repeating. What changes by weekday is only where in that cycle the day starts. The quality is a property of the planet, so Amrit is always the Moon and Kaal is always Mars.
Three good, three difficult, one neutral
Amrit, Shubh and Labh are the ones to use; Rog, Kaal and Udveg the ones to avoid; Char is neutral and fine for travel and routine. That is seven qualities across sixteen slots, so most days give you more than one of each.
