Chudakarana, the first shaving of a child’s head.
No day in August 2027 is a shubh day for mundan. Up to and including 14 January 2028 the Sun is not in Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius), Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus) or Mithun (Gemini), the only solar months this is done in. Shukra (Venus) is asta, too close to the Sun to be seen, up to and including 7 September 2027. Guru (Jupiter) is asta, too close to the Sun to be seen, up to and including 17 September 2027. A grahan (an eclipse) seen here closes 2 August 2027. The next shubh day is Friday, 28 January 2028, then Wednesday, 2 February 2028 and Thursday, 3 February 2028.
Mundan, chudakarana, is the first shaving of a child’s head. Manusmriti (2.35) puts it in the first or the third year, and many North Indian families keep to an odd year: the first, third or fifth. The child sits in the mother’s lap, a lock at the crown (the shikha) is often left, and the hair is offered at a temple or a river; the head is then washed and smoothed with turmeric or sandalwood paste.
Seasons this month:
The festival days, for this work:
Clock times are for New Delhi; they move with sunrise, by up to about an hour across India. The tithi and the nakshatra are the same everywhere. For your own city, use the mundan muhurat finder.
These are the rules the standard panchangs apply for this work; they go back to the classical muhurat texts, Muhurta Chintamani above all.
Muhurta Chintamani sorts the 27 nakshatras by nature: swift (kshipra), for trade, learning and quick starts; soft (mridu), for gentle things such as friendship and music; movable (chara), for what moves, such as travel; sharp (tikshna), for cutting and severing work. This work takes the swift ones (Ashwini, Pushya, Hasta), the soft ones (Mrigashira, Chitra, Revati), the movable ones (Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha) and the sharp ones (Jyeshtha). It leaves out the rikta (“empty”) tithis, Chaturthi, Navami and Chaturdashi, which are kept clear of beginnings, and Amavasya, the dark night. Its table also leaves out Shukla Pratipada, Shashthi, Ashtami and Dwadashi, and Krishna Pratipada, Shashthi, Ashtami and Dwadashi, which it does not count among this work’s tithis. Sunday is Surya’s day, Tuesday is Mangal’s day and Saturday is Shani’s day, and Surya, Mangal and Shani are krura (harsh) grahas: those days are left out.
All the rules for mundan: the months it is done in, the closed seasons and the hour
None, because up to and including 14 January 2028 the Sun is not in Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius), Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus) or Mithun (Gemini), the only solar months this is done in; and Shukra (Venus) is asta, too close to the Sun to be seen, up to and including 7 September 2027; and Guru (Jupiter) is asta, too close to the Sun to be seen, up to and including 17 September 2027; and a grahan seen here closes 2 August 2027. The next shubh day is Friday, 28 January 2028.
Not by the panchang: the Sun is in Singh (Leo), a solar month in which this is not done.
Of its 31 days, 16 fall while the Sun is in a sign it is not done under, 14 fall on a weekday it is not done on and 1 is a grahan day.
June 2027, with 5 days; July 2027 has 3.
A muhurat read off the panchang is the same for everybody in New Delhi. Read against your own kundli it can move, and for mundan that is usually worth the ten minutes.
