What Abhijit Muhurat is
Abhijit is the eighth of the fifteen muhurtas of the day, the one around local noon: the day from sunrise to sunset split in fifteen, so about 48 minutes, longer in summer.
What it is avoided or kept for
- Wednesday: Abhijit is not counted
- Travel towards the south in it, by many panchangs
It is read as a strong time for a start when no better muhurat can be found, for most work except on a Wednesday. If Rahu Kaal or an earth Bhadra falls inside it, that part is still avoided: Abhijit does not cancel them.
Why tradition keeps it
It is named for Abhijit, the 28th nakshatra of the older lists, between Uttara Ashadha and Shravana; the word means victorious. Rama was born at midday on Navami, and Abhijit is cited as his muhurta.
