Kharmas is the month the Sun spends in Dhanu (mid-December to Makar Sankranti) and in Meen (mid-March to Mesh Sankranti), the signs of Guru: two months a year.
Puja, daan, a pilgrimage and the month’s vrats go on, and are read as specially fruitful. The day the Sun leaves Dhanu is Makar Sankranti, and weddings resume after it.
The name is from khar, a donkey: in the popular story Surya’s horses rest for this month and donkeys pull his chariot, so the Sun moves slowly and its light is weak for new beginnings.
Source: North Indian tradition (the muhurta books bar weddings while the Sun is in Guru’s signs).
As of today, the next kharmas runs from Wed 16 December 2026 to Fri 15 January 2027.
Many families wait; the texts bar weddings and samskaras most firmly, and some panchangs allow purchases with a good muhurat.
Tithi, nakshatra, Rahu Kaal, Bhadra and panchak for where you are.
