What a karana is

and how it is worked out

A karana is half a tithi: 6° of the Moon’s gain on the Sun instead of 12. Seven of them, Bava to Vishti, repeat eight times through the month. The other four are fixed and appear once each. Vishti, also called Bhadra, is the one a muhurat is chosen around rather than inside.

A panchang is the same for a whole city.

Your kundli is not. Cast it free, or ask one of 24 astrologers which of these hours is right for what you are planning. You pay by the minute.
