The whole 120-year cycle depends on one thing: the nakshatra the Moon was in at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has a ruling graha, and that graha owns the mahadasha you were born into — with the balance of it set by how far through the nakshatra the Moon already was.
Mahadasha, antardasha, and further down
Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas in the same proportion as the main cycle, and each of those divides again. This page shows all the mahadashas, and the antardashas inside the one running now. Below that, the periods are only days long.
Why a jyotishi looks here first
