Your Ishta Devata
from the Atmakaraka

The deity taken as yours in Jaimini, read from your Atmakaraka rather than from your rashi. The Atmakaraka is the graha furthest through its rashi, so the birth time matters here: those degrees move.

We will use noon and mark the reading. Your Moon sign, nakshatra, tithi and dashas stay reliable — they move slowly. Your ascendant, houses and any yoga that depends on them will be shown as unconfirmed, because the lagna changes sign roughly every two hours.

Every graha sits somewhere in the first thirty degrees of its rashi. The graha furthest through is the Atmakaraka, and its deity is the Ishta Devata. That is the whole rule, and it is why the birth time matters: these degrees move.

Planet-Deity Associations

The traditional planet-deity mappings are: Sun — Shiva/Rama, Moon — Parvati/Krishna, Mars — Hanuman/Kartikeya, Mercury — Vishnu/Buddha, Jupiter — Dakshinamurti/Brihaspati, Venus — Lakshmi/Mahalakshmi, Saturn — Shani Dev/Kali, Rahu — Durga/Sarpa, Ketu — Ganesha/Matsya. These associations can vary across different Jyotish traditions. The Ishta Devata practice is part of the Jaimini system of Vedic astrology, which uses Karakas (significators) extensively.

What is Ishta Devata?

Ishta Devata (or Ishta Dev) is the personal deity that guides your spiritual evolution in this lifetime. In Vedic astrology, it is determined by the Atmakaraka planet (the planet with the highest degree in any sign) and its placement in the Navamsa (D9) chart. The Navamsa sign of the Atmakaraka points to the deity that your soul has a natural affinity towards. Worshipping your Ishta Devata is believed to accelerate spiritual progress and bring divine protection.

How is Ishta Devata Determined?

The process involves three steps: (1) Identify the Atmakaraka — the planet with the highest degree in any sign (excluding Rahu/Ketu in some traditions). This planet represents the soul's desire. (2) Find the Navamsa (D9) placement of the Atmakaraka — which sign it occupies in the D9 chart. (3) The lord of the 12th house from the Atmakaraka's Navamsa position indicates the Ishta Devata, as the 12th house represents moksha (liberation). Each planet corresponds to specific deities in the Vedic tradition.
