The first Ekadashi of the Hindu year, in Chaitra Shukla paksha, two days after Ram Navami.
For New Delhi, in IST. A tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere; the day a vrat falls on, and its hours, are New Delhi’s and can differ by a day abroad.
Kamada means the one that fulfils wishes.
A wish fulfilled and a curse lifted; its merit can be given to another, as Lalita gave hers to Lalit.
Sage Vasishtha tells King Dilip of the gandharva Lalit and his wife Lalita, who lived in Bhogipura, the city of King Pundarika. One day Lalit was singing in the court while Lalita was away, and his mind went to her; the song faltered. The king cursed him to become a rakshasa.
Lalita followed him into the forest and came to the ashram of the sage Shringi, who told her to keep the Kamada Ekadashi and give its merit to her husband. She kept it, and Lalit was freed of the curse.
Retold from the Ekadashi Mahatmya in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana, where Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira the story and the merit of each Ekadashi.
Beyond that, it is kept as every Ekadashi is: one sattvik meal without rice on Dashami, the sankalp at dawn, Vishnu’s puja with tulsi picked the day before, the katha, and no grain until parana, with fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu and singhara in its place. The Ekadashi page has every step and the full lists of what to eat and avoid.
Dwadashi ends early, at 18 Apr, 7:42 AM, and the fast must be broken inside it, so the window is short: 5:53 AM to 7:42 AM on Sunday, 18 April, in New Delhi.
In 2028: Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, runs until 6 Apr, 10:13 AM, past the morning, and a fast is not broken at midday, so parana waits until after madhyahna: 1:40 PM to 4:10 PM on Thursday, 6 April 2028, in New Delhi.
Kamada Ekadashi 2027 is on Saturday, 17 April 2027, in New Delhi. Ekadashi runs from 16 Apr, 11:22 AM to 17 Apr, 9:28 AM.
On Sunday, 18 April, 5:53 AM to 7:42 AM, in New Delhi. Break the fast after sunrise, once Hari Vasara is over and before Dwadashi ends.
Sunday, 29 March 2026, in New Delhi; parana on 30 March, 6:14 AM to 7:10 AM.
Wednesday, 5 April 2028, in New Delhi; parana on 6 April, 1:40 PM to 4:10 PM.
Chaitra Shukla Ekadashi, in the North Indian Purnimanta calendar.
Yes, unless you have taken the nirjala sankalp. Most families keep Ekadashi with water and fruit (phalahar); only Nirjala Ekadashi in Jyeshtha is traditionally kept without water. Decide which kind of fast you are keeping at the sankalp.
Tradition keeps every grain out of the Ekadashi fast, and rice most of all; the Puranas say that on this day sin takes refuge in grain. Families who do not fast still usually skip rice that day.
Parana is breaking the fast on Dwadashi, within the time given for each date. If the window passes, break it as soon as you can while Dwadashi lasts, with water and a little prasad. Breaking it after Dwadashi has ended is what tradition counts as a fault.
