The Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla paksha, when Vishnu wakes from the four months of yoga-nidra that began on Devshayani.
For New Delhi, in IST. A tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere; the day a vrat falls on, and its hours, are New Delhi’s and can differ by a day abroad.
Chaturmas ends, Tulsi Vivah is held, and the wedding season opens again.
Also called: Prabodhini, Devutthana, Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi.
Vishnu’s waking at the end of Chaturmas; weddings and other sanskars begin again after it.
In the Purana, Brahma tells Narada that this is the night Hari wakes, and that keeping the fast and staying awake through the night in his worship, with songs, lamps and the reading of his names, outweighs a thousand ashvamedha yajnas.
In North Indian homes the Lord is woken in the evening: his feet are drawn in the courtyard with geru and rice paste, sugarcane, singhara and the season’s new produce are kept under a basket or sieve, and the family sings “utho dev, baitho dev” as the basket is lifted.
Retold from the Ekadashi Mahatmya in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana, where Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira the story and the merit of each Ekadashi.
Tulsi Vivah, the marriage of Tulsi to Shaligram, is held on this Ekadashi or on the Dwadashi that follows, as the family’s custom is.
Beyond that, it is kept as every Ekadashi is: one sattvik meal without rice on Dashami, the sankalp at dawn, Vishnu’s puja with tulsi picked the day before, the katha, and no grain until parana, with fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu and singhara in its place. The Ekadashi page has every step and the full lists of what to eat and avoid.
Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, runs until 21 Nov, 12:09 PM, past the morning, and a fast is not broken at midday, so parana waits until after madhyahna: 1:11 PM to 3:18 PM on Saturday, 21 November, in New Delhi.
In 2027: Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, is over by 10 Nov, 3:26 PM, before sunrise, so the fast is broken in pratahkal, the first fifth of the day: 6:41 AM to 8:49 AM on Thursday, 11 November 2027, in New Delhi.
Dev Uthani Ekadashi 2026 is on Friday, 20 November 2026, in New Delhi. Ekadashi runs from 20 Nov, 7:16 AM to 21 Nov, 6:31 AM.
On Saturday, 21 November, 1:11 PM to 3:18 PM, in New Delhi. Break the fast after sunrise, once Hari Vasara is over and before Dwadashi ends.
Wednesday, 10 November 2027, in New Delhi; parana on 11 November, 6:41 AM to 8:49 AM.
Saturday, 28 October 2028, in New Delhi; parana on 29 October, 1:12 PM to 3:24 PM.
Kartik Shukla Ekadashi, in the North Indian Purnimanta calendar.
Yes, unless you have taken the nirjala sankalp. Most families keep Ekadashi with water and fruit (phalahar); only Nirjala Ekadashi in Jyeshtha is traditionally kept without water. Decide which kind of fast you are keeping at the sankalp.
Tradition keeps every grain out of the Ekadashi fast, and rice most of all; the Puranas say that on this day sin takes refuge in grain. Families who do not fast still usually skip rice that day.
Parana is breaking the fast on Dwadashi, within the time given for each date. If the window passes, break it as soon as you can while Dwadashi lasts, with water and a little prasad. Breaking it after Dwadashi has ended is what tradition counts as a fault.
