The Ekadashi of Shravana Shukla paksha, kept above all by couples praying for a child.
For New Delhi, in IST. A tithi begins and ends at the same moment everywhere; the day a vrat falls on, and its hours, are New Delhi’s and can differ by a day abroad.
One of two Putrada Ekadashis in the year; the other is in Pausha.
Also called: Pavitra Ekadashi.
A child: kept by couples who wish for one, as the king’s people kept it for him.
King Mahijit of Mahishmati ruled well but had no son. His ministers went to the sage Lomasha, who saw that in an earlier life the king had been a poor merchant who, thirsty himself, had driven a thirsty cow away from a pond on a Dwadashi.
The sage told the king’s people to keep the Putrada Ekadashi of Shravana and give its merit to their king. They kept it, and in time the queen bore a son.
Retold from the Ekadashi Mahatmya in the Uttara Khanda of the Padma Purana, where Shri Krishna tells Yudhishthira the story and the merit of each Ekadashi.
Bal Gopal, the child Krishna, is the form worshipped, and husband and wife keep the fast together.
Beyond that, it is kept as every Ekadashi is: one sattvik meal without rice on Dashami, the sankalp at dawn, Vishnu’s puja with tulsi picked the day before, the katha, and no grain until parana, with fruit, milk, sabudana, kuttu and singhara in its place. The Ekadashi page has every step and the full lists of what to eat and avoid.
Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, runs until 13 Aug, 9:36 AM, past the morning, and a fast is not broken at midday, so parana waits until after madhyahna: 1:46 PM to 4:24 PM on Friday, 13 August, in New Delhi.
In 2028: Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi, is over by 1 Aug, 3:00 PM, before sunrise, so the fast is broken in pratahkal, the first fifth of the day: 5:44 AM to 8:24 AM on Wednesday, 2 August 2028, in New Delhi.
Shravana Putrada Ekadashi 2027 is on Thursday, 12 August 2027, in New Delhi. Ekadashi runs from 12 Aug, 12:59 AM to 13 Aug, 3:00 AM.
On Friday, 13 August, 1:46 PM to 4:24 PM, in New Delhi. Break the fast after sunrise, once Hari Vasara is over and before Dwadashi ends.
Sunday, 23 August 2026, in New Delhi; parana on 24 August, 1:42 PM to 4:16 PM.
Tuesday, 1 August 2028, in New Delhi; parana on 2 August, 5:44 AM to 8:24 AM.
Shravan Shukla Ekadashi, in the North Indian Purnimanta calendar.
Yes, unless you have taken the nirjala sankalp. Most families keep Ekadashi with water and fruit (phalahar); only Nirjala Ekadashi in Jyeshtha is traditionally kept without water. Decide which kind of fast you are keeping at the sankalp.
Tradition keeps every grain out of the Ekadashi fast, and rice most of all; the Puranas say that on this day sin takes refuge in grain. Families who do not fast still usually skip rice that day.
Parana is breaking the fast on Dwadashi, within the time given for each date. If the window passes, break it as soon as you can while Dwadashi lasts, with water and a little prasad. Breaking it after Dwadashi has ended is what tradition counts as a fault.
