A month has one birthstone in the modern list and a different one in the older lists. Jyotish does not work from months at all. It reads the rashi and the graha that rules it, so a birth in this month has two answers depending on the day. The gemstone calculator reads it from a chart.

Worth knowing

facts you can check

There is more than one birthstone list

The modern list was standardised by American jewellers in 1912 and revised since; the traditional and Ayurvedic lists disagree with it and with each other on several months. Where a month has an alternate, this page names it rather than choosing one.

The Vedic stone is not the birth-month stone

Jyotish assigns a gem from the chart — usually the lagna lord or a strengthening graha — not from the calendar month. They answer different questions and often give different stones.

Colour first

Most traditions agree on the colour of a month long before they agree on the stone. That is why the swatches above match more often than the names do.

Birthstone Properties

Each birthstone carries unique metaphysical properties. January's Garnet symbolizes protection. April's Diamond represents eternal love. July's Ruby signifies passion. September's Sapphire embodies wisdom. Wearing your birthstone is believed to bring good luck, protection, and enhanced well-being throughout the year.

Alternate Birthstones

Most months have both a primary and alternate birthstone. The alternate stones provide a more affordable or readily available option while carrying similar energy. For example, June has Pearl (primary) and Alexandrite (alternate), while December has Tanzanite (primary) and Turquoise (alternate).

What Are Birthstones?

Birthstones are gemstones associated with each month of the year. The tradition dates back to ancient times, with connections to the 12 stones of Aaron's breastplate in the Bible. The modern birthstone list was standardized by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912, with updates in 2002 and 2016.
