The number on each day is the tithi at sunrise in New Delhi, counted within its paksha, as a wall calendar prints it. A date you can tap has its full panchang on a page of its own.

Chaturmas Wednesday, 14 July to Wednesday, 10 November: the four months of Vishnu’s rest, from Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi; it closes a wedding, a janeu and a study start (Vidyarambha), which can be held again from Wednesday, 10 November, Dev Uthani Ekadashi itself; griha pravesh is closed in these days anyway, by its lunar month; the panchang still gives dates for a mundan, though many North Indian families wait for Dev Uthani Ekadashi.

Sawan Monday, 19 July to Tuesday, 17 August: Shiva’s month; its Mondays are the Sawan Somvar vrats.

Chandra Grahan (penumbral lunar eclipse) Sunday, 18 July: on 18 July only the Earth’s faint outer shadow falls on the Moon, which is hard to see: the panchangs keep no sutak for it, and the day’s muhurats stand.

The tithi column is the tithi at sunrise in New Delhi. Each vrat and festival is kept by its tithi at its own moment: Pradosh in the evening, Shivratri at midnight (nishita), Sankashti at moonrise, the Purnima fast at midday, Diwali after sunset. So a vrat can fall on a day whose sunrise tithi is still the previous one.

Kamika Ekadashi is kept on Thursday, 29 July, the day Ekadashi begins: it starts after that sunrise and ends before the next, so no sunrise shows it (a kshaya tithi).

what each term means
  • Purnimanta: the North Indian calendar, where a month ends on Purnima, the full moon. In the Amanta calendar of the west and south a month ends on Amavasya, so in the dark half the two give the month different names.
  • Shukla and Krishna paksha: the bright half of the month, as the Moon grows to Purnima, and the dark half, as it wanes to Amavasya.
  • Sankranti: the day the Sun enters a new rashi; Makar Sankranti is the best known.
  • Pradosh: the evening hours just after sunset.
  • Nishita: the midnight hour, when Shivratri and Janmashtami puja is done.
  • Aparahna and madhyahna: the afternoon (the fourth of five equal parts of daylight) and the middle of the day.
  • Parana: the window for breaking a fast, such as the Ekadashi fast on the next morning.
  • Snan-daan: the holy dip and the gifts given on a Purnima or Amavasya.
  • Kshaya: a tithi that begins after one sunrise and ends before the next, so no sunrise shows it; it is kept on the day it begins.
