Chaturmas Saturday, 25 July to Friday, 20 November: the four months of Vishnu’s rest, from Devshayani to Dev Uthani Ekadashi; it closes a wedding, a janeu and a study start (Vidyarambha), which can be held again from Saturday, 21 November, the first sunrise after Kartik Shukla Ekadashi has begun; others are closed in these days anyway: a mundan by the Sun’s month, griha pravesh by its lunar month.
Pitru Paksha Saturday, 26 September to Saturday, 10 October: the fortnight of shraddh for the ancestors; it closes a new vehicle until Saturday, 10 October; others are closed in these days anyway: a wedding and a study start (Vidyarambha) by Chaturmas, a mundan and a janeu by the Sun’s month, griha pravesh by its lunar month; the panchang still gives dates for buying property or a new business, though many families wait until after Sarva Pitru Amavasya.
