The full moon of Magha, and the last day of the Magha bathing month.

Magha Purnima is Magh Shukla Purnima, the Purnima of the shukla paksha of Magh, so its date is the day on which this tithi is running at sunrise. In 2027 the tithi starts after one sunrise and ends before the next, so it is kept on the day it begins. A tithi that no sunrise touches is called kshaya. A tithi begins and ends at a real minute, not at midnight, which is why the moment decides the day, and why the same festival can fall on a different date in another country.

Magha Purnima closes the month tradition holds most auspicious for bathing in a sacred river, and many of the pilgrims who began a month of kalpavas, simple living on the riverbank, at Pausha Purnima complete it on this day with a final bath at the Sangam or another holy river. Tradition holds that devas themselves come down to bathe in the Ganga on this Purnima, in an unseen form, which is part of why the day is held in such regard for river bathing and daan.
Many families also keep Satyanarayan puja on this Purnima, the way some do on any Purnima, gathering to hear his katha and share the prasad of sheera. A vrat kept through Magh, breaking only on this closing Purnima, is a custom some families and pilgrims follow, and giving daan of grain, til, gud or warm clothes on this day is held to carry the merit of the whole month’s bathing.
Bathe at dawn, in a river if you can reach one, or with Ganga jal added to your bathing water at home, as the month’s closing bath.
If your family has kept a Magh vrat through the month, break it today after the bath and the puja, sharing the day as the vrat’s completion.
Set up Satyanarayan’s picture on a clean chowki if your family keeps this puja on the Purnima, and offer panchamrit and sheera as bhog.
Read or hear the Satyanarayan katha with the family gathered, and share the sheera as prasad afterwards, since the katha is meant to be heard together, not alone.
Give daan of grain, til, gud, blankets or money to the poor or at a temple, since this Purnima’s charity is held to carry extra merit.
Light a diya in the evening before the family deity, closing the day and, for those who kept kalpavas, the month.
Source: Satyanarayan Vrat Katha, read from the Skanda Purana in homes that keep this puja on the Purnima
The best-known telling in the Skanda Purana follows a merchant named Sadhu, who after years without a child is advised by Narada to keep the Satyanarayan vrat, and is blessed with a daughter, Kalavati. He keeps the vow faithfully until, caught up in arranging her marriage, he forgets it, and hardship follows for his family and her husband’s.
It is only when Sadhu and his son-in-law return to the vrat, gathering their family to hear the katha and share the prasad of sheera, that their fortunes turn back. The story is read on this closing Purnima of Magh as it is on any Purnima the vrat is kept, as a reminder that a vow once taken is meant to be kept, not set aside once its first wish is granted.

What to avoid
Magha Purnima is kept with particular crowds at Prayagraj, Haridwar and other river towns, where it closes the month of kalpavas for many pilgrims; in Odisha and Bengal the day is also linked to Dol Purnima customs that lead into the Holi season.
A Purnima is read at sunrise, so its date can differ by a day between cities and countries when the tithi changes close to that hour, the same rule that moves any sunrise-based festival.

Magha Purnima is kept on the day its tithi, Purnima, is running at sunrise. The tithi begins and ends at the same instant all over the world, but sunrise comes at its own hour in every place, so in the US or UK the day that holds it can be a day earlier than in India.
