Shankhchud Kaal Sarp Dosha
Rahu in the 9th, Ketu in the 3rd

Shankhchud is Kaal Sarp with Rahu in the 9th house (father, fortune and dharma) and Ketu in the 3rd (courage, siblings and effort). It forms only when all seven grahas sit on one side of that line. Kaal Sarp and Kal Sarpa are two spellings of the same dosha.

A real birth with Shankhchud: Rahu in the 9th

Shankhchud: Rahu in the 9th, Ketu in the 3rd

The type is named by the house Rahu sits in; Ketu is always six houses (bhavas) away

Rahu · 9th housefather, fortune and dharma
Ketu · 3rd housecourage, siblings and effort

All seven grahas sit on one side of the Rahu-Ketu line. With Rahu in the 9th, tradition reads a pull between father, fortune and dharma on Rahu’s side and courage, siblings and effort on Ketu’s: one end wants more, the other lets go. It is felt most in the Rahu and Ketu dashas, and it is read with the whole kundli, never alone.

Kaal Sarp is not among the yogas of Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra; the twelve names come from later tradition, which is why astrologers weigh it differently.

Rahu in the 9th house

What the texts and Lal Kitab say of this end of the line

PhaladeepikaPhaladeepika 8.27 holds that Rahu in the 9th house (the house of fortune and dharma) makes a person contrary in speech. The text describes someone who leads their clan or community, or holds civic office, yet is drawn to unrighteous deeds.

Lal KitabRahu in the 9th house is a mixed placement in Lal Kitab. It can unsettle faith, fortune and the children's luck, and it works well only while relations with brothers and sisters stay good; an interest in unusual paths of faith and in distant travel is common.

Ketu in the 3rd house

PhaladeepikaPhaladeepika 8.29 holds that Ketu in the 3rd house (the house of siblings and courage) gives a long life, strength, wealth and fame, a happy married life and good food. The text also cautions about the loss of a brother.

Lal KitabKetu in the 3rd house is a mixed placement in Lal Kitab. Trouble can come through brothers, lawsuits and travel, while the children do well and the person stays devout.

All seven sit in the half from Ketu to Rahu (the reverse half, called vilom). The graha nearest the line is Saturn (Shani), 2.4° inside it. Two hours earlier or later the lagna moves a sign, Rahu moves a house, and the same day gives another type.

How common Shankhchud is

Kaal Sarp of any type formed in 7% of 8,349 real births from 1960 to 1999, and Shankhchud in 0.6%, about one chart in 167. The seven sit on one side for weeks or months at a time, so these births cluster in certain years; the type then follows the hour of birth.

Common questions

What is Shankhchud Kaal Sarp dosha?

All seven grahas on one side of the Rahu-Ketu line, with Rahu in the 9th house and Ketu in the 3rd. Tradition reads it as a pull between father, fortune and dharma and courage, siblings and effort.

Is Shankhchud Kaal Sarp in the classical texts?

No. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra does not list Kaal Sarp; the yoga and its twelve names come from later tradition. The texts do read Rahu and Ketu in each house, which this page quotes.

When is Shankhchud Kaal Sarp felt most?

In the Rahu and Ketu mahadashas and antardashas (their main periods and sub-periods in the Vimshottari dasha), and when transiting Rahu or Ketu crosses the same axis.

How do I know if I have Shankhchud Kaal Sarp?

Two things must both hold: Rahu in the 9th house from your lagna, and all seven grahas on one side of the Rahu-Ketu line. The second depends almost entirely on the date; the first on the birth time, because the lagna moves a sign about every two hours. An unsure birth time can change the type; it changes whether the seven are enclosed only when the fast Moon sits near the line.

What is the remedy for Shankhchud Kaal Sarp dosha?

Rudrabhishek on Mondays, Nag puja on Nag Panchami, Rahu’s mantra on Saturdays and Ketu’s on Tuesdays, and a Kal Sarpa Shanti once at Trimbakeshwar if the dosha is in the kundli. No Gomed or Lehsunia without a full reading.

Is Kaal Sarp in your kundli?

The calculator places all seven grahas against your Rahu-Ketu line and names the type if it forms.
