Kaal Sarp dosha
one axis, and what is on each side

All seven planets on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Twelve types, named for where Rahu sits — and a partial case that gets called the full one far too often.

The rule

one axis, seven planets

Kaal Sarp dosha is all seven planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn — falling on one side of the axis between Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are always opposite each other, so they divide the chart in two; the dosha is the case where nothing sits on the other half.

If even one planet is on the far side it is not the full yoga, and most charts described as Kaal Sarp online are the partial case.

The twelve types

named for the house Rahu is in

The type is decided by which house Rahu occupies, and Ketu is always six houses away. Twelve positions, twelve names — that is all the naming is.

Four of the twelve are transliterated two ways, and our own calculator uses the second spelling — so if you check a chart and it comes back Padma rather than Padam, that is the same type and not a different one. The column is here because the mismatch is ours and a reader should not have to guess.

Common questions

3 questions
What is Kaal Sarp dosha?

All seven planets on one side of the Rahu–Ketu axis. Rahu and Ketu sit opposite each other and divide the chart in two; the dosha is the case where the other half is empty. One planet on the far side and it is the partial case, not the full yoga.

How many types of Kaal Sarp dosha are there?

Twelve, named for the house Rahu occupies — Anant (house 1), Kulik (house 2), Vasuki (house 3), Shankhpal (house 4) and so on. Ketu is always six houses opposite.

Do I have Kaal Sarp dosha?

It is a yes-or-no fact about your chart and the free calculator answers it from your birth details. Most charts do not have the full yoga.

A dosha is a position in a chart, not a verdict.

Whether one is in yours is a question with a yes-or-no answer, and the chart is free to cast. What it means for you is the conversation.
