The first quarter of Ashlesha: a Sagittarius navamsa, naam akshar Di, and a birth that starts in Budh’s mahadasha with 17 years to 12.8 years of it left.
Ashlesha pada 1 is the first 3°20′ of Ashlesha, 16°40′ Cancer – 20°00′ Cancer, in Cancer. A Moon here is named by the syllable Di and falls in a Sagittarius navamsa.
Gand Mool nakshatra. Ashlesha is one of the six Gand Mool nakshatras; many families keep a Mool shanti for a birth in any of its padas, though the junction pada is read as the stronger.
Gand Mool are the six nakshatras on the seams where a water sign gives way to a fire sign: Ashwini, Magha and Mula, ruled by Ketu, and Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati, ruled by Budh. The Mool shanti is traditionally done on the 27th day after birth, when the Moon returns to the birth nakshatra.
Ashlesha in Brihat Jataka (16.5) Brihat Jataka is severe on Ashlesha: it says a person born with the Moon here pays little heed to other people’s work, eats without care for what or where, is ungrateful and clever at deceiving others, and leans towards wrongdoing. (Chapter 16 reads several nakshatras in each verse, one after another.) The text reads the nakshatra as a whole; the pada refines it through its navamsa, below.
Ashlesha gives the Moon its nature through Budh; pada 1 sends it into a Sagittarius navamsa, ruled by Guru. The navamsa (D9) is the chart read for marriage and for the strength behind a placement, so in this pada Guru colours what Ashlesha gives.
By natural friendship Guru counts Budh an enemy, and Budh counts Guru neutral, so the two pull against each other and the pada asks for balance.
The pada tradition reads each quarter by its navamsa’s element: a fire navamsa makes this a Dharma pada, turned towards right conduct, duty and purpose.
Almost no Hindi names begin with Di (डी). Families then often choose a name that begins with the nearest sound, or one of the nakshatra’s other syllables, and use Di in the namkaran rite itself.

A Moon in Ashlesha starts life in the mahadasha of Budh, 17 years in all. How much is left at birth depends on how far the Moon had gone: at the start of pada 1 it is 17 years, at its end 12.8 years.
A suggestion, as your faith allows: the grahas this pada answers to, each on its own day.
4 March 1985, 23:00, Mumbai: the Moon at 18.08° Cancer, in Ashlesha pada 1, with Libra rising. The engine gives 15 years, 2 months, 10 days of Budh’s mahadasha left at birth.
In the 8,349 real births the site’s figures are counted on, 0.97% had the Moon in this pada, about one in 103.
Di (डी). A child born with the Moon in this pada is traditionally given a name beginning with it.
Rashi Cancer, navamsa Sagittarius. It runs 16°40′ Cancer to 20°00′ Cancer.
Budh, with 17 years to 12.8 years of its 17 years left at birth, depending on the Moon’s exact degree.
Ashlesha is a Gand Mool nakshatra, though this is not its junction pada. The six, and when the shanti is done, are explained above.
It needs a birth time, because the Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day. The free kundli gives you the nakshatra, the pada and the dasha that follows from it.
