Which one you are born into
Each nakshatra has a ruling graha, and that graha’s mahadasha is running when you are born. The Moon is usually part-way through the nakshatra, and the same share of that mahadasha has already gone. The Moon’s place is measured in the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard Indian correction from the Western zodiac to the star-fixed one.
An example. Born with the Moon at 15° of Vrishabh, you are in Rohini (10° to 23°20′ of Vrishabh), whose lord is Chandra; the Moon has crossed 38% of it, so 38% of Chandra’s 10 years had gone at birth, and 6 years 3 months of Chandra mahadasha were left. Mangal’s follows, then Rahu’s, in the fixed order. Parashara sets out the Vimshottari dasha in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 46. The last months of a mahadasha, as it hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and are read with care.
Periods inside periods
Each mahadasha divides into nine antardashas in the same order, starting with its own lord, and an antardasha of B inside A runs for A × B ÷ 120 years. Each antardasha divides again into pratyantar dashas, and those into sookshma dashas of a few days.

How Parashara reads a dasha (BPHS chapter 47)
BPHS says a dasha gives two kinds of results: general ones, which come from the graha's own nature, and particular ones, which come from where it sits in the kundli and what it joins. BPHS 47.2
The results of a graha's dasha are in keeping with its strength. BPHS 47.3
The dreshkana (each third of a rashi, 10°) a graha occupies shows when its results are felt: in the first dreshkana, at the start of the dasha; in the second, in the middle; in the third, towards the end. BPHS 47.3
If the graha is vakri (retrograde), this order is reversed. Rahu and Ketu, which always move vakri, always give their results in the reverse order. BPHS 47.4
The results are favourable if, as the dasha begins, the dasha lord is in the lagna (the 1st house), in its exaltation or own rashi, or in a friendly rashi. BPHS 47.5
The results are unfavourable if the dasha lord is then in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, in its debilitation rashi, or in an enemy's rashi. BPHS 47.6

What is Vimshottari dasha?

What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
The mahadasha is the major period, from six years for the Sun to twenty for Venus. Each is divided into nine antardashas in the same order, and an antardasha of B inside a mahadasha of A runs for A × B ÷ 120 years.
Is a Saturn or Rahu mahadasha always bad?
No. A period gives the results of the houses its lord rules and of the house it sits in. Saturn ruling good houses and sitting strong in a good one gives a steady, rewarding period. Rahu rules no house: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of that rashi’s lord, and the tradition adds that it acts like Saturn (“Shanivat Rahu”). Do dasha dates need an exact birth time?
For the balance at birth, yes. The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day, so a few hours change how much of the first mahadasha had gone and shift every date after it. The order and lengths do not change.
