Where Bharani pada 1 is
3°20′ of the zodiac, and what falls in itBharani pada 1 is the first 3°20′ of Bharani, 13°20′ Aries – 16°40′ Aries, in Aries. A Moon here is named by the syllable Li and falls in a Leo navamsa.
What this pada adds
its navamsa and its aimBharani in Brihat Jataka (16.1) Brihat Jataka says a person born with the Moon in Bharani carries work through to success, is truthful and able, and stays free of illness and sorrow. (Chapter 16 reads several nakshatras in each verse, one after another.) The text reads the nakshatra as a whole; the pada refines it through its navamsa, below.
Bharani gives the Moon its nature through Shukra; pada 1 sends it into a Leo navamsa, ruled by Surya. The navamsa (D9) is the chart read for marriage and for the strength behind a placement, so in this pada Surya colours what Bharani gives.
By natural friendship Surya counts Shukra an enemy, and Shukra counts Surya an enemy, so the two pull against each other and the pada asks for balance.
The pada tradition reads each quarter by its navamsa’s element: a fire navamsa makes this a Dharma pada, turned towards right conduct, duty and purpose.
