The Twelve Rashis
Your Moon sign, and what it holds

Your rashi is the sign the Moon was in when you were born. The table gives each one’s lord, nakshatras and naam akshar; pick yours for its full page.

Each rashi in brief

A pada is a quarter of a nakshatra; the naam akshar is the syllable a child’s name traditionally begins with. Each rashi is thirty degrees of the sidereal zodiac, from Mesh at 0°. A birth date alone cannot fix your rashi: the Moon changes rashi every two and a half days, so it needs the time and place too.

Ta, Da, Tha, Na and Dha each come in two sounds: a dot under the letter (Ṭa, Ḍa, Ṇa) marks the hard one, and the Devanagari shows which your name starts with.

Rashi, lagna and sun sign

  • RashiThe sign the Moon was in at birth. In India this is “your rashi”: the rashifal, Sade Sati, dhaiyya and naam akshar go by it.
  • LagnaThe sign rising in the east at the moment of birth. It changes every two hours or so, so it needs your birth time; the houses of the kundli are counted from it. Find your lagna
  • Sun signThe sign the Sun was in: what Western horoscopes use. Vedic signs are sidereal, measured against the fixed stars, so for most people the Vedic sun sign is one sign earlier than the Western one.

Common questions

What is my rashi?

The sign the Moon was in when you were born. You need your date, time and place of birth to fix it.

How many rashis are there?

Twelve, each thirty degrees: Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Singh, Kanya, Tula, Vrishchik, Dhanu, Makar, Kumbh and Meen.

What if the birth time is not known?

The date narrows it to one or two rashis, since the Moon spends about two and a half days in each. Many families also use the naam rashi: the rashi whose naam akshar the person’s name begins with, from the table above. It serves for naam milan (matching by names) and a rough rashifal, but it is not the Moon rashi of the birth chart.

Is rashi the same as sun sign?

No. In India, rashi means the Moon sign. The sun sign is what Western horoscopes use, and it matches your rashi for only about one person in twelve.

Which rashis have Sade Sati now?

With Shani in Meen, three: Mesh (rising phase now; its Sade Sati runs until 31 May 2032), Kumbh (setting phase now; its Sade Sati runs until 23 February 2028) and Meen (peak phase now; its Sade Sati runs until 17 April 2030).
