Makar Rashi (Capricorn) Shani Dhaiyya
Next: Kantaka Shani, 3 June 2027 to 17 April 2030

Dhaiyya (from dhai, two and a half), or small panoti, is Shani in the 4th (Kantaka Shani) or the 8th (Ashtama Shani) from your Moon rashi, about two and a half years each, longer when Shani turns back across the line. For Makar, it comes when Shani is in Mesh or in Singh. Shani is in Meen now, the 3rd from Makar, so neither dhaiyya is running. The 3rd is one of the three houses where Shani does good from the Moon (Phaladeepika 26.2). For Makar, both dhaiyyas fall in hard signs for Shani, Mesh and Singh. Heavier is not hopeless: the Saturday routine and the upay below are meant for exactly this.

Also written Makara, Magaram. Dhaiyya is also spelt dhaiya or dhaya; in the south, Kantaka Shani is called Ardhashtama Shani.

Makar’s two dhaiyyas

Kantaka means a thorn; Ashtama, the eighth. Each has its own dates, and when Shani leaves a sign for a few months and comes back, the window runs from first entry to final exit.

Kantaka Shani

Shani in Mesh (Aries), the 4th from your Moon

Next · 3 June 2027 to 17 April 2030

About 2 years 10 months. Shani enters Mesh on 3 June 2027 and leaves it for the last time on 17 April 2030. In between, it steps back into Meen from 20 October 2027 until 22 February 2028 (the dhaiyya pauses) and moves on into Vrishabh from 8 August 2029 until 4 October 2029 (the dhaiyya pauses). By the classical rule (Phaladeepika 26.25), its heaviest part comes when Shani is in the last third of Mesh (20° to 30°): from 3 May 2029 until 8 August 2029 and from 5 October 2029 until 17 April 2030.

Last time: 17 April 1998 to 7 June 2000.

Ashtama Shani

Shani in Singh (Leo), the 8th from your Moon

Later · 27 August 2036 to 13 July 2039

About 2 years 10 months. Shani enters Singh on 27 August 2036 and leaves it for the last time on 13 July 2039. In between, it moves on into Kanya from 22 October 2038 until 4 April 2039 (the dhaiyya pauses). By the classical rule (Phaladeepika 26.25), its heaviest part comes when Shani is in the last third of Singh (20° to 30°): from 10 November 2037 until 11 February 2038, from 31 July 2038 until 22 October 2038 and from 5 April 2039 until 13 July 2039.

Last time: 1 November 2006 to 10 September 2009.

What to expect from 3 June 2027

On 3 June 2027 Shani enters Mesh, the 4th from a Makar Moon, and this Kantaka stretch lasts until 17 April 2030. Because Shani is your own rashi lord, it centres on the home and on your own health and energy. After a first visit of four and a half months, Shani is back in Meen from 20 October 2027 to 22 February 2028; Meen is your 3rd, one of the three houses where Shani does good from the Moon (Phaladeepika 26.2), so the pause is a real breather. Shani is briefly in Vrishabh from 8 August to 4 October 2029, and the heaviest months come in the last third of Mesh, from 3 May to 8 August 2029 and from 5 October 2029 to the end (Phaladeepika 26.25). If a house move or major repairs cannot wait, keep them out of the months Shani spends in Mesh: finish them before 3 June 2027, or use that pause from 20 October 2027 to 22 February 2028.

Shani in your own chartAcharya Parashara reads Makar’s dhaiyya against your own kundli: your lagna (rising sign), your dasha, where Shani sits.

What each dhaiyya reaches for Makar

Each reading rests on four things: the houses Shani rules counted from your Moon, the house it sits in, the three houses its gaze (drishti) falls on, and how comfortable Shani is in that sign, from exalted (uchcha, strongest) to debilitated (neecha, weakest). The rules are from Phaladeepika, Mantreswara’s classical Jyotish text.

Kantaka Shani · Shani in Mesh

Shani at its weakest: the hardest stretch

Shani is your own rashi lord, ruling the 1st (yourself, your body, health), and also the 2nd (family, savings, speech). So when it moves through Mesh, the 4th house from a Makar Moon, your own health and the family's savings are drawn into the home. That makes this Kantaka Shani, which touches home, mother, vehicles, property and peace of mind. Mesh is Shani's sign of debilitation, which Phaladeepika says at 26.32 sharpens the transit. For Shani in the 4th, Phaladeepika 26.22 warns of loss touching spouse, relatives and wealth.

  • Work and moneyFrom Mesh, Shani's drishti (gaze) falls on your 10th, so work may ask for extra patience just when home life feels unsettled. Do not quit a job over domestic stress; deal with each separately.
  • Home and familyHome life can feel heavy with your own rashi lord in your 4th: repairs may pile up, or a mother may need more care. Share chores and the care of elders across the family rather than taking it all on yourself.
  • Marriage and partnersShani, lord of your 1st, can make you withdraw into yourself as it moves through the 4th, and a spouse tends to feel it first. Tell your partner when you are tired instead of going silent.
  • HealthYour rashi lord, aspecting your 1st and 6th from the 4th, asks people with a Makar Moon to watch energy and long-standing ailments closely. Keep a weekly rest day and report any lingering pain early.

From Mesh, Shani’s drishti also falls on Mithun, Tula and Makar: your 6th (work under pressure, rivals, debts and illness), your 10th (work, status and dealings with seniors) and your 1st (your own health, confidence and how others see you).

What to do Do not stretch your savings for a house or vehicle during this dhaiyya.

Ashtama Shani · Shani in Singh

Shani in an enemy’s sign: heavier

Singh, the 8th house from a Makar Moon, is an enemy sign for Shani, so the rule that sharpens the Kantaka in Mesh applies here as well. Shani there is Ashtama Shani, the dhaiyya of health, sudden events, hidden matters, in-laws and inheritance. Ruling your 1st (yourself, your body) and 2nd (family, savings, speech), it carries your own health and the family's money into the 8th house. There, Phaladeepika 26.22 warns of losses touching children, friends and wealth, and of illness.

  • Work and moneyYour job asks for patience under Shani's drishti (gaze) on your 10th, and your 2nd lord in the 8th can bring sudden costs against income. Keep an emergency fund apart from the account your EMIs come from.
  • Home and familyShani's gaze falls on your 2nd, the house of family and savings, and on your 5th. So family ties and the children's choices both ask for attention. Listen before you decide a child's stream or career for them.
  • Marriage and partnersFriction with in-laws over money can arise, since the 8th is the house of your spouse's family and Shani there also rules your 2nd, family money. Neither lend to nor borrow from in-laws during this stretch.
  • HealthYour own rashi lord in the 8th, the house of chronic illness, places your body under strain during this Ashtama. Take any symptom that lasts more than a fortnight to a doctor.

From Singh, Shani’s drishti also falls on Tula, Kumbh and Vrishabh: your 10th (work, status and dealings with seniors), your 2nd (family, savings and the way you speak) and your 5th (children, studies and judgement).

Phaladeepika 26.22 is a single verse for Shani in each of the first eight houses from the Moon, which is why both dhaiyyas cite it.

What to do Make a full health check-up the first thing you do when this dhaiyya begins.

Shani’s Ashtakavarga points. The Ashtakavarga is a table of points (bindus) drawn from your birth chart. By Phaladeepika (26.41, 23.10), a transit goes easier through a sign where Shani holds many bindus (points) in your own chart: five or more of eight favours it, four is middling, fewer weigh more. Find Shani’s bindus in your chart.

Your Saturday routine

The upay (remedies) families have kept through dhaiyya for generations. Free, and each with its reason.

Shani mantra · 108 times on Saturdays

ॐ शं शनैश्चराय नमः

Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah

Shani’s short mantra, built on its seed syllable “Sham”. Saying it every week without fail is itself the discipline Shani asks for.

  • Hanuman Chalisa, Tuesday and SaturdayBy the legend, Shani Dev promised Hanuman not to trouble Hanuman’s devotees.
  • Donate black til, urad or mustard oil on SaturdayOr help a worker or an elder: Shani is the graha of labour and old age.
  • A diya under a pipal, Saturday eveningTradition holds that Shani is pleased by the worship of the pipal.
  • Keep your word and your routineShani is the karaka (significator) of karma: patient, honest work is the upay tradition values most.

Neelam (blue sapphire) is not a general dhaiyya remedy. It suits some charts and harms others, so wear it only after your own kundli has been checked.

An upay for Makar

Beside the Saturday routine every rashi shares, this one suits Makar in particular.

Shani is your own rashi lord, so the direct path is Shani's own worship: on Saturdays recite the Shani Chalisa, or the Dasharatha Shani Stotra, the hymn to Shani attributed to King Dasharatha. Either one strengthens the lord of your Moon sign through the very transit that will test you.

Why two Makar people have different dhaiyyas

Your own kundli decides how it goes.

Your lagnaShani rules two houses of every chart; for Vrishabh and Tula lagna (the rising sign) it is the best graha of the chart.
Your dashaA good mahadasha (the main planetary period you are running) carries a dhaiyya lightly; a hard one is what people remember.
Shani at birthStrong and well placed at birth, it carries you through dhaiyya; weak, or crowded by hard grahas such as Mangal, Rahu or Ketu, dhaiyya weighs more.

An example: one real chart

Take the site’s sample kundli: born 15 July 1990, 2:30 PM, in Mumbai. The Moon is in Meen, so its next dhaiyya is Kantaka Shani, Shani in Mithun, from 31 May 2032 to 13 July 2034, the same dates as for every Meen Moon. Four things make it this chart’s own.

  • The lagnaTula (Libra). Counted from it, Shani rules the 4th and the 5th. One is a kendra (an angle of the chart) and the other a trikona (a house of fortune), so the Janam Kundli report names Shani this chart’s yogakaraka, its best graha. With Makar lagna and the same Moon, Shani would rule the 1st and the 2nd instead.
  • The dashaOver this dhaiyya: Moon mahadasha, 15 May 2026 to 14 May 2036, which the report reads as one that asks for care. In this chart the Moon sits in the 6th house.
  • Shani at birthIn Dhanu, the 3rd house from the lagna, vakri (moving backwards as seen from Earth). Dhanu is a neutral sign for Shani. It is vargottama, in the same sign in the navamsa (the ninth-part chart), but falls short of the Shadbala (six-fold strength) the report asks of it.
  • Shani’s pointsShani’s own Ashtakavarga bindus: 3 in Mithun (heavier).

Another Meen Moon shares these dates and almost none of the rest. Two Makar Moons are the same: the dates on this page are theirs alike, and what they bring is not.

Common questions

Is Makar rashi (Capricorn) in Shani’s dhaiyya now?

No. Shani is in Meen, the 3rd from Makar; dhaiyya is Shani in the 4th or 8th.

When is the next dhaiyya for Makar?

Kantaka Shani from 3 June 2027 to 17 April 2030; Ashtama Shani from 27 August 2036 to 13 July 2039.

What is the difference between Kantaka and Ashtama Shani?

Kantaka Shani is Shani in the 4th from the Moon, read for home, mother, property and peace of mind. Ashtama Shani is Shani in the 8th, read for health, sudden events and in-laws. For Makar, Kantaka Shani is Shani in Mesh, and Ashtama Shani is Shani in Singh.

Is dhaiyya bad for Makar?

Both of Makar’s dhaiyyas are among the heavier ones. Kantaka Shani falls in Mesh (where Shani is debilitated), which sharpens it (Phaladeepika 26.32). Ashtama Shani falls in Singh (an enemy’s sign for Shani), which sharpens it (Phaladeepika 26.32), on top of the 8th’s own sharper warning (26.33). How much you feel it depends on your lagna (rising sign), your dasha and Shani’s bindus in your chart.

What are the upay (remedies) for Makar’s dhaiyya?

The free ones on this page: the Saturday routine every rashi shares (the Shani mantra, the Hanuman Chalisa, a diya under a pipal, seva for workers and elders), and the one that suits Makar in particular, with its reason. Wear blue sapphire only after your own kundli has been checked.
