What the 9th house rules and what Parashara says of it, how to read it in your own kundli with a worked example, each graha in it, and where its lord sits.
BPHS reads the 9th house for fortune, religion and dharma, pilgrimages to sacred places, the spouse's brother and the brother's wife. BPHS 11.10
When it is strong: BPHS calls one fortunate when the lord of the 9th is strong in the 9th itself, and very fortunate when Guru (Jupiter) is in the 9th, its lord is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) and the lagna lord is strong. For the father, a 9th lord in a kendra aspected by Guru points to high standing and vehicles, and a 9th lord in the 10th, with a benefic aspecting the 10th lord, to a rich and well-known father. BPHS 20.1–2, 20.6–7
When it is afflicted: If the lord of the 9th is debilitated and Mangal (Mars) sits 2nd or 4th from the 9th, BPHS warns of a father in want. A debilitated or combust 9th lord with weak lords of the 3rd and 10th, or Rahu in the 9th from the 9th with its dispositor (the lord of the rashi a graha sits in) in the 8th and the 9th lord debilitated, is where the text warns of a life short of fortune, even of having to beg for food. BPHS 20.4, 20.12, 20.30
These are the text’s readings under its conditions, as the old texts write them for a man; they apply to anyone. A real kundli is read as a whole.
Each help counts one point for the house and each weight one against. Two or more on balance for it reads strong; any balance against it, weak; anything between, mixed.
From the Janam Kundli report
Its lord Mercury sits in your 10th house in Cancer, in an enemy's sign.
In it: Sun, Jupiter and Venus.
Drishti on it from Saturn.
for it: lord well placed from your lagna · Jupiter and Venus in it; against it: drishti from Saturn · 20 points, under 25
Read together: help and weight are level — a house that gives, with effort.
This is the chart on our home page. The Janam Kundli report reads all twelve of your houses this way, with the dasha periods that bring each one forward.
| Graha | Lal Kitab | What it gives here |
|---|---|---|
| Surya (Sun) | Good | The Sun in the 9th house gives fortune, spiritual growth, and a charitable nature. The father is supportive. |
| Chandra (Moon) | Good | The Moon in the 9th house brings luck, spiritual inclination, and long voyages. Fortune improves after marriage. |
| Mangal (Mars) | Hard | Mars in the 9th house makes the person hot-tempered but religiously inclined. The relationship with the father may be strained. |
| Budh (Mercury) | Good | Mercury in the 9th house gives spiritual wisdom, foreign travel, and a philosophical bent of mind. |
| Guru (Jupiter) | Good | Jupiter in the 9th house is excellent for luck, spirituality, pilgrimage, and higher education. The father is prosperous. |

| Shani (Saturn) | Hard | Saturn in the 9th house delays luck and creates obstacles in spiritual pursuits and higher education. |
| Rahu | Mixed | Rahu in the 9th house is a mixed placement in Lal Kitab. It can unsettle faith, fortune and the children's luck, and it works well only while relations with brothers and sisters stay good; an interest in unusual paths of faith and in distant travel is common. |
| Ketu | Good | Ketu in the 9th house gives deep spiritual inclination, interest in moksha, and pilgrimages. The father may be distant. |

Luck, father, dharma, teachers and long journeys. It is called the Dharma bhava, and is a trikona.
By Lal Kitab: Surya, Chandra, Budh, Guru, Shukra and Ketu.
Guru (Jupiter), as Parashara names it (BPHS 32.34); later texts add Surya (Sun).
An empty house is not a weak one. With no graha in it, the 9th is read through its lord, the grahas that look at it, its ashtakavarga points and its karaka.
Any graha in the 3rd; Mangal (Mars) also from the 2nd and 6th, Guru (Jupiter) from the 1st and 5th, and Shani (Saturn) from the 7th and 12th.
