What Chandra gives in the 9th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 9th house brings luck, spiritual inclination, and long voyages. Fortune improves after marriage.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 9th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Offer water and white flowers at a temple.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 9th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.7 holds that Chandra (Moon) in the 9th house (the house of fortune and dharma) gives prosperity, virtue and children. The text adds victory, and success in every undertaking from its very start.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 9th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.5: the Moon in the 9th gives sons, friends, relations and wealth.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 9th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 9th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 9th house, Dharma bhava, rules luck, father, dharma, teachers and long journeys; it is a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru, Surya. The 9th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 6th | Malefic |
| Meen (Pisces) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 5th | Benefic |
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 9th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Meen lagna. Chandra sits in Vrishchik there (debilitated) and rules your 5th house, which makes it a benefic for Meen lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 9th house gives its good in full for Kanya lagna, half for Vrishchik lagna, a quarter for Tula, Dhanu and Makar lagna and none for Meen lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Mesh, Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Singh and Kumbh lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 9th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 9th among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: a devotional, thoughtful mood, a wish to travel.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 8 houses where Chandra does well (with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Kanya and Vrishchik lagna; it is debilitated for Meen lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer water and white flowers at a temple.
