What Mangal gives in the 9th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Mars in the 9th house makes the person hot-tempered but religiously inclined. The relationship with the father may be strained.
Lal Kitab reads Mangal in the 9th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep a solid piece of silver. Feed sweet bread to dogs on Tuesdays.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Mangal in the 9th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Mangal
Phaladeepika 8.10 holds that Mangal (Mars) in the 9th house (the house of father, fortune and dharma) brings closeness to those in power, yet dislike from others. As cautions, the text warns of the loss of the father, and of violence that could go as far as taking a life.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Mangal sits in, the 9th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.6: Mangal in the 9th is read as a leaning towards wrong deeds.
Its results show most in Mangal’s own mahadasha (7 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 9th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 9th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 9th house, Dharma bhava, rules luck, father, dharma, teachers and long journeys; it is a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru, Surya. The 9th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Mangal sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 1st and 8th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Makar (Capricorn) | Exalted | 7th and 12th | Maraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 6th and 11th | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 5th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Mesh (Aries) | Own rashi | 4th and 9th | Yogakaraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Neutral | 3rd and 8th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Mithun (Gemini) | Enemy | 2nd and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kark (Cancer) | Debilitated | 1st and 6th | Neutral |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 5th and 12th | Benefic |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kanya (Virgo) | Enemy | 4th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 3rd and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Own rashi | 2nd and 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) |
Mangal’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 9th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Mangal: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Singh lagna. Mangal sits in Mesh there (own rashi) and rules your 4th and 9th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Singh lagna (BPHS 34). Both point the same way, a graha good for the lagna and strong in its rashi: the best this table holds. Its drishti falls on the 4th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Mangal the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Mangal in the 9th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Mangal is moving through the 9th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 9th among Mangal’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Mangal page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: strong views, energy for travel, arguments over beliefs.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Mangal does well in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh, Singh and Meen lagna; it is debilitated for Vrishchik lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep a solid piece of silver; feed sweet bread to dogs on Tuesdays.
The 12th (expenses), 3rd (younger siblings) and 4th (mother).
