What Shukra gives in the 9th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Venus in the 9th house gives love for arts, foreign travel, and spiritual inclination through devotion (Bhakti).
Lal Kitab reads Shukra in the 9th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shukra in the 9th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shukra
Phaladeepika 8.19 holds that Shukra (Venus) in the 9th house (the house of fortune and dharma) blesses a person with a spouse, friends and children. The text adds that prosperity comes through favour from government, seniors or those in power.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shukra sits in, the 9th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.8 gives Shukra in the 9th the same result as Guru there (20.7): devotion and a philosophical mind.
Its results show most in Shukra’s own mahadasha (20 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 9th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 9th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 9th house, Dharma bhava, rules luck, father, dharma, teachers and long journeys; it is a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru, Surya. The 9th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shukra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 2nd and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Makar (Capricorn) | Friendly | 1st and 6th | Malefic · Maraka— the lagna lord, but also lord of the 6th: a malefic and a killer (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Friendly | 5th and 12th | Benefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Meen (Pisces) | Exalted | 4th and 11th | Malefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 3rd and 10th | Malefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Own rashi | 2nd and 9th | Benefic · Maraka · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 1st and 8th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 7th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 6th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 6th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.37–38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kanya (Virgo) | Debilitated | 5th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Tula (Libra) | Own rashi | 4th and 9th | Yogakaraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral | 3rd and 8th | Malefic |
Shukra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 9th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shukra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Makar lagna. Shukra sits in Kanya there (debilitated) and rules your 5th and 10th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Makar lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Shukra in the 9th house gives its good in full for Kark lagna, half for Kanya and Kumbh lagna, a quarter for Vrishabh, Mithun and Tula lagna, little for Vrishchik and Dhanu lagna and none for Makar lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Mesh, Singh and Meen lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shukra is moving through the 9th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 9th among Shukra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shukra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as very good: good fortune, pilgrimage, devotion, blessed travel.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 10 houses where Shukra does well (with the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 10th, 11th and 12th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Kark, Kanya and Kumbh lagna; it is debilitated for Makar lagna.
