The old texts read one placement at a time and speak of a man; they apply to anyone. In a real kundli, the rashi Shani sits in, the house’s lord and the grahas that join or look at it decide how much of each reading holds.
Phaladeepika 8.20 holds that when Shani (Saturn) rises in the lagna (the ascendant, 1st house) in a sign other than its own or its exaltation, the person meets sorrow and hardship from childhood and struggles with poverty. The text also describes such a person as untidy and slow to act. If the lagna is Tula (Libra), where Shani is exalted, or Makar (Capricorn) or Kumbh (Aquarius), its own signs, Phaladeepika turns the reading round: the person rises to authority, as the head of a city or a leader on a par with those in power. Phaladeepika 8.20
Phaladeepika 8.21 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) gives an unattractive face, little wealth and a pull towards wrong ways. The text adds that later in life the person settles in a foreign land and gains vehicles, wealth and comforts there. Phaladeepika 8.21
Phaladeepika 8.21 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 3rd house (the house of siblings and courage) makes a person very intelligent, generous in giving and happy with the spouse. The text also notes a tendency to inactivity and to being weighed down by sorrow. Phaladeepika 8.21
Phaladeepika 8.22 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 4th house (the house of home, mother and comforts) as a placement of unhappiness at home. The text speaks of being without a house of one's own or vehicles, and of poor health in the early years. It also cautions about the loss of the mother under this placement. Phaladeepika 8.22
Phaladeepika 8.22 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 5th house (the house of children and intellect) brings restless wandering and a troubled, unsettled mind. The text speaks of a lack of children, wealth and happiness, and describes the person as untrustworthy and ill-intentioned. Phaladeepika 8.22
Phaladeepika 8.22 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 6th house (the house of enemies and disease) gives a large appetite and wealth. The text also says the person may be held down by opponents, and describes them as stubborn and self-respecting. Phaladeepika 8.22
Phaladeepika 8.22 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 7th house (the house of marriage and partnership) as difficult for married life. The text speaks of a troublesome spouse, poverty, much wandering and distress. Phaladeepika 8.22
Phaladeepika 8.23 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) as a hard placement. The text speaks of poor cleanliness, lack of wealth, piles, a harsh mind, hunger and being looked down on by friends. Phaladeepika 8.23
Phaladeepika 8.24 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 9th house (the house of father, fortune and dharma) as weakening luck, wealth, children and religious merit. The text also cautions about the loss of the father, and describes the person as given to wrong ways. Phaladeepika 8.24
Phaladeepika 8.24 holds that Shani (Saturn) in the 10th house (the house of career and status) brings a rise to authority, or a post as trusted adviser to those in power. The text links this placement with farming and land, and with courage, wealth and renown. Phaladeepika 8.24
Phaladeepika 8.24 counts Shani (Saturn) in the 11th house (the house of gains) as a strong placement. The text gives a long life, lasting wealth and a good income, courage and freedom from disease. Phaladeepika 8.24
Phaladeepika 8.24 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 12th house (the house of loss and expense) as a difficult placement. The text speaks of shamelessness, poverty, lack of children, a defect in some limb, dull judgement and being driven out by opponents. Phaladeepika 8.24
