The old texts read one placement at a time and speak of a man; they apply to anyone. In a real kundli, the rashi Surya sits in, the house’s lord and the grahas that join or look at it decide how much of each reading holds.
Phaladeepika 8.1 holds that Surya (Sun) in the lagna (the ascendant, 1st house) gives thin hair, a tall and lean frame, and a proud, quick-tempered and impetuous nature. The text reads such a person as brave but impatient and hard-hearted, slow to set to work, and with eyes that are not clear. When the lagna is Kark (Cancer) and Surya sits in it, Phaladeepika warns of cataract; in Mesh (Aries), of eye disease; in Singh (Leo), of night-blindness; and in Tula (Libra), of poverty and the loss of children. These are the text's cautions for those signs. Phaladeepika 8.1
Phaladeepika 8.2 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 2nd house (the house of wealth and speech) leaves a person short of learning, modesty and money. The text adds a halting, stammering speech. Phaladeepika 8.2
Phaladeepika 8.2 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 3rd house (the house of siblings and courage) makes a person strong, brave, wealthy and generous. The one shadow the text names is friction with one's own relatives. Phaladeepika 8.2
Phaladeepika 8.2 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 4th house (the house of home, land and contentment) takes away comfort, and leaves a person without close relatives, land, friends or a home of their own. The text adds that such a person works in government service and spends away the property inherited from the father. Phaladeepika 8.2
Phaladeepika 8.3 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 5th house (the house of children and intellect) brings a shortage of happiness, wealth and children, and the text warns of a short life. It also grants a sharp intelligence, and a life that takes one travelling through forests and wild country. Phaladeepika 8.3
Phaladeepika 8.3 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 6th house (the house of enemies, disease and competition) is a strong placement. The text gives a rise to authority or a position of command, fame, good character, wealth and victory over rivals. Phaladeepika 8.3
Phaladeepika 8.3 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 7th house (the house of marriage and partnership) brings the displeasure of those in power and some deformity of the body. The text adds a wandering life, humiliation, and a life without a spouse. Phaladeepika 8.3
Phaladeepika 8.3 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) brings a loss of wealth and of friends. As cautions, the text warns of a shorter life and of weak eyesight, even blindness. Phaladeepika 8.3
Phaladeepika 8.4 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 9th house (the house of father, fortune and dharma) gives children, a circle of relatives, and reverence for the gods and for Brahmins. As a caution, the text warns of the loss of the father. Phaladeepika 8.4
Phaladeepika 8.4 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 10th house (the house of career and status) gives children, vehicles, praise, intelligence, wealth, strength and fame. The text counts it a mark of rising to authority or a position of command. Phaladeepika 8.4
