What Surya gives in the 9th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 9th house gives fortune, spiritual growth, and a charitable nature. The father is supportive.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 9th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Maintain a clean kitchen and never waste food.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 9th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.4 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 9th house (the house of father, fortune and dharma) gives children, a circle of relatives, and reverence for the gods and for Brahmins. As a caution, the text warns of the loss of the father.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 9th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.3: the Sun in the 9th gives children, wealth and happiness.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 9th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 9th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 9th house, Dharma bhava, rules luck, father, dharma, teachers and long journeys; it is a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Guru, Surya. The 9th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Surya sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 5th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Makar (Capricorn) | Enemy | 4th | Benefic |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Enemy | 3rd | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 2nd | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Mesh (Aries) | Exalted | 1st | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 12th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral | 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Kark (Cancer) | Friendly | 10th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Singh (Leo) | Own rashi | 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral | 8th | Neutral |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Tula (Libra) | Debilitated | 7th | Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 6th | Malefic |
Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 9th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishabh lagna. Surya sits in Makar there (enemy) and rules your 4th house, which makes it a benefic for Vrishabh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 9th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 9th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 9th among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as neutral: father, teachers, authority and dharma come up; depends on the rest of the chart.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 7 houses where Surya does well (with the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Singh and Dhanu lagna; it is debilitated for Kumbh lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Maintain a clean kitchen and never waste food.
