What Mangal gives in the 8th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Mars in the 8th house causes accidents, surgeries, piles, and blood-related diseases. Ancestral property may be lost.
Mangal in the 8th house from the lagna is one of the six placements that give Mangal dosha (the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th); the kundli also checks it from the Moon, and many charts have it cancelled. Check Mangal dosha in your kundli.
Lal Kitab reads Mangal in the 8th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Float rewri (sesame sweets) in flowing water. Feed sweet chapati to dogs daily.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Mangal in the 8th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Mangal
Phaladeepika 8.9 holds that Mangal (Mars) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) brings some deformity of the body, poverty and the ill-will of people. The text also counts it among the signs of a short life, which it gives as a caution.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Mangal sits in, the 8th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.6 gives Mangal in the 8th the same result as the Sun there (20.3): few children and weak eyesight.
Its results show most in Mangal’s own mahadasha (7 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 8th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 8th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 8th house, Ayu bhava, rules longevity, sudden events, inheritance and hidden matters; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 8th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Mangal sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Own rashi | 1st and 8th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 7th and 12th | Maraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Makar (Capricorn) | Exalted | 6th and 11th | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 5th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 4th and 9th | Yogakaraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Mesh (Aries) | Own rashi | 3rd and 8th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Neutral | 2nd and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mithun (Gemini) | Enemy | 1st and 6th | Neutral |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kark (Cancer) | Debilitated | 5th and 12th | Benefic |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 4th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Enemy | 3rd and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 2nd and 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) |
The 8th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Mangal a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Mangal’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 8th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Mangal: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Dhanu lagna. Mangal sits in Kark there (debilitated) and rules your 5th and 12th houses, which makes it a benefic for Dhanu lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Mangal the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Mangal in the 8th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Mangal is moving through the 8th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 8th among Mangal’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Mangal page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: take care of the body and see a doctor when needed; a time of change.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Mangal does well in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Mesh, Mithun and Kanya lagna; it is debilitated for Dhanu lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Float rewri (sesame sweets) in flowing water; feed sweet chapati to dogs daily.
The 11th (income), 2nd (money saved) and 3rd (younger siblings).
