Lal Kitab

Lal Kitab
its houses, its nine rin and its upay

Lal Kitab is a book of astrology written in Urdu in Punjab between 1939 and 1952. It reads each graha by the house it sits in and answers trouble with simple household remedies: below are its houses, its nine family debts and its upay.

How Lal Kitab reads a chart

Four ways it differs from Parashari astrology

  • It reads the house, not the rashiEvery kundli is read as if Mesh rose: a graha keeps its house, counted from the lagna, and the rashis are set aside. That is why its reading of Shani in the 7th differs from Parashari’s: Lal Kitab counts the 7th Shani’s exaltation.
  • Every graha has a house of its ownIts pakka ghar, where the graha is steadiest. The table below gives all nine.
  • Debts of the family, not only of the personNine rin, debts carried down a family line, each read from certain grahas in certain houses and settled by the family together.
  • Remedies from daily lifeIts upay are household acts: feeding animals, giving something to flowing water, keeping or avoiding an object at home. They are done in place of long pujas or costly stones.

How Lal Kitab upay are done

As those who follow Lal Kitab keep them

  • One remedy at a time, for forty to forty-three days without a break; a missed day starts the count again.
  • Done in daylight, between sunrise and sunset, by the person whose chart it is, or by a blood relative on their behalf.
  • A rin is settled by the whole family on one day, each member giving their share.
  • A remedy is chosen for the graha the chart shows as troubled; one for a graha that is already well placed is not done.
  • Items illegal to keep in India, such as deer skin, ivory or a caged parrot, are left out of every remedy on this site.

Advice for every household

  • Keep the kitchen clean and never waste food — this appeases Rahu and Jupiter.
  • Maintain good relations with in-laws — this strengthens Venus and Jupiter.
  • Never cut a peepal tree or any green tree without planting a new one.
  • Always keep a silver item (coin, chain, or ring) on your person for Moon's blessings.
  • Feed birds and animals regularly — this reduces the malefic effects of all planets.
  • Do not keep broken mirrors, stopped clocks, or leaking taps in the house.
  • Respect your parents and elders — this strengthens Sun (father) and Moon (mother).

Common questions

What is Lal Kitab?

A book of astrology and remedies written in Urdu in Punjab between 1939 and 1952, attributed to Pandit Roop Chand Joshi. It reads each graha by its house and gives simple household upay.

Is Lal Kitab different from Vedic astrology?

It uses the same nine grahas and twelve houses but reads them its own way, by house rather than rashi, with a pakka ghar for each graha and its own list of debts and remedies.

Which house is Shani’s pakka ghar?

The 8th. Lal Kitab also counts the 7th as Shani’s exaltation: It brings steady income, property, support from superiors and success with machinery or iron.

How do I know which rin my chart has?

From the houses your grahas sit in, which need your birth time. Each rin above lists the placements that bring it; the Janam Kundli report reads them for your chart.

Can a Lal Kitab remedy do harm?

Those who follow it hold that a remedy for a graha that is already well placed can unsettle it, which is why one remedy is chosen from the chart and done alone for its forty days.
