What Shukra gives in the 3rd house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Venus in the 3rd house gives artistic siblings, love of music and arts, and short profitable journeys.
Lal Kitab reads Shukra in the 3rd house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shukra in the 3rd house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shukra
Phaladeepika 8.17 reads Shukra (Venus) in the 3rd house (the house of siblings and courage) as an unfavourable placement. The text speaks of the person being without a spouse, unhappy, short of money, miserly and not well liked.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shukra sits in, the 3rd house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.8 gives Shukra in the 3rd the same result as Guru there (20.7): a stingy streak.
Its results show most in Shukra’s own mahadasha (20 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 3rd house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 3rd, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 3rd house, Sahaja bhava, rules younger siblings, courage, effort and short trips; it is an upachaya (the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses, which grow better with time and effort); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Mangal. The 3rd house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shukra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 2nd and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 1st and 6th | Malefic · Maraka— the lagna lord, but also lord of the 6th: a malefic and a killer (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 5th and 12th | Benefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kanya (Virgo) | Debilitated | 4th and 11th | Malefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Tula (Libra) | Own rashi | 3rd and 10th | Malefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral | 2nd and 9th | Benefic · Maraka · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 1st and 8th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Makar (Capricorn) | Friendly | 7th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Friendly | 6th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 6th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.37–38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Meen (Pisces) | Exalted | 5th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 4th and 9th | Yogakaraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Own rashi | 3rd and 8th | Malefic |
Shukra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 3rd. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shukra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mithun lagna. Shukra sits in Singh there (enemy) and rules your 5th and 12th houses, which makes it a benefic for Mithun lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Shukra in the 3rd house gives its good in full for Makar lagna, half for Singh and Meen lagna, a quarter for Mesh, Vrishchik and Dhanu lagna, little for Vrishabh and Mithun lagna and none for Kark lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Kanya, Tula and Kumbh lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shukra is moving through the 3rd counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika counts the 3rd among Shukra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shukra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as good: success, gains, recognition, creative work does well.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 10 houses where Shukra does well (with the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Singh, Makar and Meen lagna; it is debilitated for Kark lagna.
