What Chandra gives in the 8th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 8th house causes emotional turbulence, fear of water, and chronic health issues. The mother's health may suffer.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 8th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Keep a square piece of silver. Do not keep any temple or place of worship at home. Offer milk at a cremation ground.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 8th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.7 holds that Chandra (Moon) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) brings illness. The text also counts it among the signs of a short life, which it gives as a caution.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 8th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.5: the Moon in the 8th gives a fickle mind and illness.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 8th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 8th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 8th house, Ayu bhava, rules longevity, sudden events, inheritance and hidden matters; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 8th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 6th | Malefic |
| Meen (Pisces) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 5th | Benefic |
The 8th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Chandra a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 8th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 8th house gives its good in full for Tula lagna, half for Dhanu lagna, a quarter for Vrishchik, Makar and Kumbh lagna and none for Mesh lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Vrishabh, Mithun, Kark, Singh, Kanya and Meen lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 8th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 8th among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: mood swings and passing stress. This transit is Chandrashtama: the two or so days each month the tradition keeps for routine work, not new starts.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Chandra does well in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Tula and Dhanu lagna; it is debilitated for Mesh lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Keep a square piece of silver; do not keep any temple or place of worship at home; offer milk at a cremation ground.
