What Guru gives in the 8th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Jupiter in the 8th house causes obstacles in fortune, delayed results, and trouble through in-laws. The father's health needs care.
Lal Kitab reads Guru in the 8th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay

This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Guru in the 8th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Guru
Phaladeepika 8.15 holds that Guru (Jupiter) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) brings poverty and a living earned in lowly service under others. The text warns of wrongdoing, but gives a long life.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Guru sits in, the 8th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.7: Guru in the 8th gives a mean nature.
Its results show most in Guru’s own mahadasha (16 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 8th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 8th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 8th house, Ayu bhava, rules longevity, sudden events, inheritance and hidden matters; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 8th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Guru sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 9th and 12th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Own rashi | 8th and 11th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Makar (Capricorn) | Debilitated | 7th and 10th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 6th and 9th | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Meen (Pisces) | Own rashi | 5th and 8th | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Mesh (Aries) | Friendly | 4th and 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 3rd and 6th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mithun (Gemini) | Enemy | 2nd and 5th | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kark (Cancer) | Exalted | 1st and 4th | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 3rd and 12th | Malefic |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Enemy | 2nd and 11th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Tula (Libra) | Enemy | 1st and 10th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) |
The 8th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Guru a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Guru’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 8th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Guru: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishchik lagna. Guru sits in Mithun there (enemy) and rules your 2nd and 5th houses, which makes it a benefic for Vrishchik lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Guru in the 8th house gives its good in full for Dhanu lagna, half for Vrishabh and Singh lagna, a quarter for Mesh, Kanya and Makar lagna, little for Tula, Vrishchik, Kumbh and Meen lagna and none for Mithun lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Kark lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Guru is moving through the 8th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 8th among Guru’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Guru page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: change, inheritance matters, spiritual depth.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Guru does well in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh, Singh and Dhanu lagna; it is debilitated for Mithun lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Offer turmeric at a temple; donate yellow items on Thursdays.
The 12th (expenses), 2nd (money saved) and 4th (mother).
