What Shani gives in the 8th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 8th house (pakka ghar, the house Lal Kitab gives a graha as its own, where it is steadiest) gives long life and deep occult knowledge but chronic diseases and hidden enemies. It is a strong position.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 8th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Donate iron or black sesame on Saturdays. Keep a piece of iron under the pillow.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 8th house, to keep its good results strong; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.23 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 8th house (the house of longevity and hidden matters) as a hard placement. The text speaks of poor cleanliness, lack of wealth, piles, a harsh mind, hunger and being looked down on by friends.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 8th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 8th the same result as the Sun there (20.3): few children and weak eyesight.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 8th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 8th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 8th house, Ayu bhava, rules longevity, sudden events, inheritance and hidden matters; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 8th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi | 7th and 8th | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 6th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 5th and 6th | Neutral |
| Tula (Libra) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Friendly | 4th and 5th | Yogakaraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
The 8th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Shani a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 8th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Kark lagna. Shani sits in Kumbh there (own rashi) and rules your 7th and 8th houses, which makes it a maraka for Kark lagna (BPHS 34). A graha hard for the lagna and strong in its rashi gives that harder side with force. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 8th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 8th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 8th among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: long-term health care, obstacles, a time of change. This transit is a dhaiyya (Ashtama Shani): two and a half years, smaller than Sade Sati, felt at home and in health.
Lal Kitab counts it a good placement, one of the 6 houses where Shani does well (with the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 10th and 11th). By its rashi, it is strongest for Mithun, Kark and Meen lagna; it is debilitated for Kanya lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Donate iron or black sesame on Saturdays; keep a piece of iron under the pillow.
The 10th (career), 2nd (money saved) and 5th (children).
