What Rahu gives in the 12th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Rahu in the 12th house is in its pakka ghar (the house Lal Kitab gives a graha as its own, where it is steadiest), yet Lal Kitab reads it both ways: it works as Budh in the chart works. It can give settlement abroad and hidden strengths, but also broken sleep and spending, often on the women of the family.
That Rahu here works as Budh does is Lal Kitab’s own rule for this one house. The saying that Rahu acts like Shani, further down, is the Parashari tradition’s general one; the two are read side by side.
Lal Kitab reads Rahu in the 12th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Eat your meals in the kitchen. Keep fennel and sugar candy by the bed. Keep a solid silver elephant.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Rahu in the 12th house, offered to steady its mixed results; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Rahu
Phaladeepika 8.27 reads Rahu in the 12th house (the house of loss and expense) as a placement of heavy spending. The text warns of wrongdoing done in secret, and cautions about ailments linked to water in the body.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Rahu sits in, the 12th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
Brihat Jataka gives no reading for Rahu or Ketu in a house: Varahamihira reads the seven grahas, the Sun to Saturn.
Its results show most in Rahu’s own mahadasha (18 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 12th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 12th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 12th house, Vyaya bhava, rules expenses, foreign lands, sleep and moksha; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 12th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Rahu sits in | That rashi’s lord | Which is, for this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Meen (Pisces) | Guru | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mesh (Aries) | Mangal | Maraka |

| Kark (Cancer) | Mithun (Gemini) | Budh | Malefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Kark (Cancer) | Chandra | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Singh (Leo) | Surya | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Kanya (Virgo) | Budh | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Tula (Libra) | Shukra | Malefic · Maraka |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Mangal | Benefic |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Guru | Malefic |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Shani | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Shani | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
Rahu is counted the lord of no house, so it gives the results of the rashi it sits in and of that rashi’s lord. Where that lord is good for your lagna, Rahu here leans good. Parashara says the same: Rahu gives mostly the results of the bhava it sits in and of the bhava lord it joins (BPHS 34.16), and in a kendra (one of the four angles of the chart, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, where a graha acts with most force), joined or seen by the lord of a kendra or a trikona (the 1st, 5th and 9th houses, the houses of fortune), it becomes a yogakaraka, a graha that lifts the chart (34.17). The tradition’s “Shanivat Rahu” adds that Rahu acts like Shani; Phaladeepika says so too (8.34). With all seven other grahas between Rahu and Ketu, a kundli is read for Kaal Sarp dosha.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Not the birth placement above: here Rahu is moving through the 12th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 12th among Rahu’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Rahu page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as mixed: links abroad, spiritual confusion, spending on change.
Lal Kitab reads it both ways, with good and hard results by turns; Rahu does well in the 3rd, 6th and 10th. How it works out depends on the rashi it sits in and on your lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Eat your meals in the kitchen; keep fennel and sugar candy by the bed; keep a solid silver elephant.
The 4th (mother), 6th (illness) and 8th (longevity).
