What Shani gives in the 12th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
Saturn in the 12th house causes chronic diseases, life away from the birthplace, and spiritual detachment. Expenditure is heavy.
Lal Kitab reads Shani in the 12th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Donate black blankets or shoes on Saturdays. Offer mustard oil at a temple.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Shani in the 12th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Shani
Phaladeepika 8.24 reads Shani (Saturn) in the 12th house (the house of loss and expense) as a difficult placement. The text speaks of shamelessness, poverty, lack of children, a defect in some limb, dull judgement and being driven out by opponents.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Shani sits in, the 12th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.9 gives Shani in the 12th the same result as the Sun there (20.3): a fall in standing.
Its results show most in Shani’s own mahadasha (19 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 12th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 12th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 12th house, Vyaya bhava, rules expenses, foreign lands, sleep and moksha; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 12th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Shani sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 10th and 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mesh (Aries) | Debilitated | 9th and 10th | Yogakaraka |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Friendly | 8th and 9th | Neutral |
| Kark (Cancer) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 7th and 8th | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Kark (Cancer) | Enemy | 6th and 7th | Malefic · Maraka |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Singh (Leo) | Enemy | 5th and 6th | Neutral |
| Tula (Libra) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 4th and 5th | Yogakaraka |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Tula (Libra) | Exalted | 3rd and 4th | Malefic |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Enemy | 2nd and 3rd | Maraka |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 1st and 2nd | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Own rashi | 1st and 12th | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) |
| Meen (Pisces) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Own rashi | 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) |
The 12th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Shani a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Shani’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 12th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Shani: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishabh lagna. Shani sits in Mesh there (debilitated) and rules your 9th and 10th houses, which makes it a yogakaraka for Vrishabh lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. Its drishti falls on the 9th house, which it rules for this lagna, so there the glance is not counted against it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Shani the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Shani in the 12th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Shani is moving through the 12th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 12th among Shani’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Shani page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as difficult: expenses, a wish to withdraw, spiritual lessons, hurdles abroad. This transit is the rising phase of Sade Sati: Shani’s seven and a half years over the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Shani does well in the 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishchik, Kumbh and Meen lagna; it is debilitated for Vrishabh lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Donate black blankets or shoes on Saturdays; offer mustard oil at a temple.
The 2nd (money saved), 6th (illness) and 9th (luck).
