What Chandra gives in the 12th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Moon in the 12th house causes sleep disturbances, eye trouble, and health issues for the mother. Expenditure rises.
Lal Kitab reads Chandra in the 12th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Donate white cloth or rice on Mondays. Keep a vessel of water under the bed at night and pour it on a plant in the morning.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Chandra in the 12th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Chandra
Phaladeepika 8.7 holds that Chandra (Moon) in the 12th house (the house of loss and expense) makes a person disliked by others and brings misery and insult. The text adds a strong tendency to idleness.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Chandra sits in, the 12th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.5: the Moon in the 12th is read as giving an ill-disposed nature and a defect in some limb.
Its results show most in Chandra’s own mahadasha (10 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 12th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 12th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 12th house, Vyaya bhava, rules expenses, foreign lands, sleep and moksha; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 12th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Chandra sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Meen (Pisces) | Neutral | 4th | Neutral |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mesh (Aries) | Neutral | 3rd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Exalted | 2nd | Maraka |
| Kark (Cancer) | Mithun (Gemini) | Friendly | 1st | Benefic |
| Singh (Leo) | Kark (Cancer) | Own rashi | 12th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Singh (Leo) | Friendly | 11th | Malefic |
| Tula (Libra) | Kanya (Virgo) | Friendly | 10th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Tula (Libra) | Neutral | 9th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Debilitated | 8th | Neutral |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Neutral | 7th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral | 6th | Malefic |
| Meen (Pisces) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral | 5th | Benefic |
The 12th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Chandra a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Chandra’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 12th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Chandra: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Mithun lagna. Chandra sits in Vrishabh there (exalted) and rules your 2nd house, which makes it a maraka for Mithun lagna (BPHS 34). A graha hard for the lagna and strong in its rashi gives that harder side with force. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
By Brihat Jataka 20.11, Chandra in the 12th house gives its good in full for Mithun lagna, half for Singh lagna, a quarter for Kark, Kanya and Tula lagna and none for Dhanu lagna, by the rashi it sits in. The verse gives no share for a neutral rashi, which is where it sits for Mesh, Vrishabh, Vrishchik, Makar, Kumbh and Meen lagna. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Chandra is moving through the 12th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 12th among Chandra’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Chandra page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: expenses, feelings to work through, rest needed.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Chandra does well in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Mithun and Singh lagna; it is debilitated for Dhanu lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Donate white cloth or rice on Mondays; keep a vessel of water under the bed at night and pour it on a plant in the morning.
