What Surya gives in the 12th house by Lal Kitab and by Phaladeepika, its upay, the houses it looks at from there, and what it means for each lagna.
The Sun in the 12th house causes expenditure, eye troubles, and loss through government matters. The person may live away from the birthplace.
Lal Kitab reads Surya in the 12th house by the house, not by your lagna; Parashara’s view for your own lagna is further down, and Phaladeepika and Brihat Jataka may differ. How Lal Kitab and Parashara differ · Lal Kitab: pakka ghar, rin and upay
Float jaggery (gur) in flowing water. Offer wheat at a temple.
This is Lal Kitab’s one upay for Surya in the 12th house, offered to ease its harder side; it is a suggestion, and your whole kundli may call for another. All upay for Surya
Phaladeepika 8.4 holds that Surya (Sun) in the 12th house (the house of loss and expense) sets a person against the father. The text adds weak eyesight and a shortage of wealth and children.
How much of this holds turns on the rest of the chart: the rashi Surya sits in, the 12th house’s lord and the grahas with it or looking at it. The old texts speak of a man; their readings apply to anyone.
BJ 20.3: the Sun in the 12th warns of a fall in standing.
Its results show most in Surya’s own mahadasha (6 years) and in its antardashas inside the others. The 12th house’s matters also come forward in the periods of the house’s lord, which depends on your lagna.
Its drishti (a graha’s glance: the houses it looks at feel its influence) from the 12th, by the rules our kundli reading weighs houses with:
The 12th house, Vyaya bhava, rules expenses, foreign lands, sleep and moksha; it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th and 12th houses, the hard houses of illness, sudden events and loss); its karaka (the graha that naturally signifies a house’s matters, whatever the lagna) is Shani. The 12th house, and every graha in it
| Lagna | Surya sits in | Its state there | Lord of your | For this lagna |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Meen (Pisces) | Friendly | 5th | Benefic |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mesh (Aries) | Exalted | 4th | Benefic |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Vrishabh (Taurus) | Enemy | 3rd | Malefic |
| Kark (Cancer) | Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral | 2nd | Maraka |
| Singh (Leo) | Kark (Cancer) | Friendly | 1st | Benefic |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Singh (Leo) | Own rashi | 12th | Neutral— gives results by association (34.32) |
| Tula (Libra) | Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral | 11th | Malefic |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Tula (Libra) | Debilitated | 10th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Chandra, the 9th lord (34.35–36) |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Friendly | 9th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.38) |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Friendly | 8th | Neutral |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Makar (Capricorn) | Enemy | 7th | Maraka |
| Meen (Pisces) | Kumbh (Aquarius) | Enemy | 6th | Malefic |
The 12th is a dusthana, one of the hard houses. Where the table calls Surya a yogakaraka (the graha that brings yoga, success and standing, to a lagna: the best it can have) or a benefic for a lagna, sitting here it gives less than its lordship promises.
Surya’s state in each rashi, and the houses it rules for each lagna, as our free kundli reads them (BPHS chapter 34); each house links to what Parashara says of its lord sitting in the 12th. “Its state there” is how that rashi treats Surya: exalted, own, friendly, neutral (sam), enemy or debilitated. “For this lagna” is Parashara’s verdict on the houses it rules. The two answer different questions.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
Take Vrishchik lagna. Surya sits in Tula there (debilitated) and rules your 10th house, which makes it a yogakaraka for Vrishchik lagna (BPHS 34). The two pull apart: the label says what it does for this lagna, the rashi how much strength it has to do it, so it gives less of that good than its label promises, unless a neecha bhanga (a cancelled debility) lifts it. The Lal Kitab reading above is the same for every lagna; this row is the part that changes with yours.
Brihat Jataka 20.11 grades how much of its good a graha gives by the rashi it sits in. For a malefic like Surya the translator reverses the scale and the commentators differ, so read Surya in the 12th house by Parashara’s table above. BJ 20.10–11
Not the birth placement above: here Surya is moving through the 12th counted from your Moon rashi. Phaladeepika does not count the 12th among Surya’s good transit houses (all twelve, on the Surya page). Our Monthly Prediction reads it as challenging: expenses, a pull to prayer, links abroad, looking inward.
Lal Kitab counts it a hard placement; Surya does well in the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th and 11th. By its rashi, it is strongest for Vrishabh and Kanya lagna; it is debilitated for Vrishchik lagna.
Lal Kitab’s upay for it: Float jaggery (gur) in flowing water; offer wheat at a temple.
The 6th (illness).
