Shani mahadasha is about
hard work, duty and delay
Shani · Mangal
Mangal antardasha in Shani mahadasha runs 1 year 1 month 9 days. It is the seventh of the nine and begins 12 years 6 months 3 days after the mahadasha starts.
Shani’s 19 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120
1 year 1 month 9 days · 405 days
Chandra antardasha comes before it, and Rahu antardasha after it.
Shani counts Mangal an enemy, and Mangal counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Shani–Mangal period starts; where Shani and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
hard work, duty and delay
effort, property and disputes
Shani–Mangal area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: from the very start you gain honour from those in power and a position of command. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain wealth, a new house, and more farm and livestock wealth; when it is hard: you lose wealth, eat coarse food, and spend needlessly. |
| Family | When it goes well: your kinsmen are happy; when it is hard: your father and brothers suffer, you quarrel with partners, and you lose kinsmen. |
| Health | When it is hard: you risk wounds, thieves, snakes and weapons, suffer gout, feel great distress, and depend on others. |
| Faith and journeys | When it is hard: you are driven away to foreign lands. |
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 57, verses 55–62
Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Shani’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Shani, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes a havan (sacred fire offering) and giving a bull in charity.
BPHS 57.61–62A caution: When Mangal sits in the 2nd house, or rules the 7th or 8th house, BPHS warns of great distress, dependence on others and the fear of untimely death. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 57.61–62
What Shani and Mangal are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) | Mangal is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th | Benefic 1st and 8th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Maraka 7th and 12th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th | Malefic 6th and 11th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Neutral 1st and 6th | Leans hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Benefic 5th and 12th | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Shani and Mangal side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Shani–Mangal at 44, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Shani rules your 2nd house and 3rd house and sits in your 11th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 23 February 2028 – 3 April 2029, from the age of 44 to 45. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Mangal: rules your 5th house and 12th house, sits in your 11th house. It brings children, study, and creative work; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Favourable — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona, enough Shadbala and strong in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Shani–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal | 24 days | 23 February 2028 – 18 March 2028 | Opens |
| Rahu | 1 month 29 days | 18 March 2028 – 17 May 2028 | Care |
| Guru | 1 month 23 days | 17 May 2028 – 10 July 2028 | Mixed |
| Shani | 2 months 2 days | 10 July 2028 – 12 September 2028 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 28 days | 12 September 2028 – 9 November 2028 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 23 days | 9 November 2028 – 2 December 2028 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 2 months 6 days | 2 December 2028 – 8 February 2029 | Mixed |
| Surya | 20 days | 8 February 2029 – 28 February 2029 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 1 month 6 days | 28 February 2029 – 3 April 2029 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Mangal’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Shani–Mangal a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.61–62), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Daan: red lentils and jaggery, on Tuesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Mangal period: Mangal mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Mangal upay.
1 year 1 month 9 days (405 days): Shani’s 19 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 12 years 6 months 3 days after a Shani mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shani and Mangal sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. By nature the friendship is uneven: Shani sees Mangal as an enemy, and Mangal sees Shani as neutral. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Shani–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 6 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 20 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.61–62), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Shani–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
