Rahu mahadasha is about
ambition, the unfamiliar and sudden turns
Rahu · Mangal
Mangal antardasha in Rahu mahadasha runs 1 year 18 days. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 16 years 11 months 12 days after the mahadasha starts.
Rahu’s 18 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120
1 year 18 days · 384 days
Chandra antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Guru mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Rahu counts Mangal an enemy, and Mangal counts Rahu neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Rahu–Mangal period starts; where Rahu and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.
ambition, the unfamiliar and sudden turns
effort, property and disputes
Rahu–Mangal area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you recover a lost position, meet with authorities and gain command; when it is hard: you lose your position. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: lost wealth and property return, harvests improve, and you gain wealth, red garments and gains through kinsmen. |
| Family | When it goes well: children bring happiness and your children and employer prosper; when it is hard: your spouse, children and siblings suffer, and relations turn to friction. |
| Health | When it is hard: thieves, wounds and bodily pain threaten you. |
| Faith and journeys | When it goes well: your family deity blesses you, and you make journeys. |
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 55, verses 76–83
Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Rahu’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Rahu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes giving a cow or a bull in charity.
BPHS 55.83A caution: When Mangal rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this sub-period maraka (a time the texts link with danger to life) and warns of lethargy and danger to life. BPHS 55.83
What Mangal is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Rahu follows the lord of its rashi
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Mangal is (lord of) |
|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Benefic 1st and 8th |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Maraka 7th and 12th |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Malefic 6th and 11th |
| Kark (Cancer) | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th |
| Singh (Leo) | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Malefic 3rd and 8th |
| Tula (Libra) | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Neutral 1st and 6th |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic 5th and 12th |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th |
| Meen (Pisces) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th |
Rahu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Rahu in each house shows how.
One kundli that meets Rahu–Mangal at 69, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Rahu sits in your 4th house: this period brings its matters forward — the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Shani, which rules your 4th house and 5th house and sits in your 3rd house. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, and nothing else: one point in favour does not open a period.
In this kundli it runs 26 April 2060 – 14 May 2061, from the age of 69 to 70. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Mangal: rules your 2nd house and 7th house, sits in your 7th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, strong in its sign and well placed from Rahu; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Rahu–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal | 22 days | 26 April 2060 – 18 May 2060 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 27 days | 18 May 2060 – 15 July 2060 | Opens |
| Guru | 1 month 20 days | 15 July 2060 – 4 September 2060 | Mixed |
| Shani | 2 months | 4 September 2060 – 4 November 2060 | Opens |
| Budh | 1 month 24 days | 4 November 2060 – 28 December 2060 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 22 days | 28 December 2060 – 19 January 2061 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 2 months 5 days | 19 January 2061 – 24 March 2061 | Mixed |
| Surya | 19 days | 24 March 2061 – 12 April 2061 | Opens |
| Chandra | 1 month 2 days | 12 April 2061 – 14 May 2061 | Care |

Suggestions for Mangal’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Rahu–Mangal a remedy of its own (BPHS 55.83), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Daan: red lentils and jaggery, on Tuesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Mangal period: Mangal mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Mangal upay.
1 year 18 days (384 days): Rahu’s 18 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 16 years 11 months 12 days after a Rahu mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Rahu and Mangal sit in your kundli. Rahu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Mangal is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Mangal is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Rahu sees Mangal as an enemy, and Mangal sees Rahu as neutral. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Rahu–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months 5 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 19 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 55.83), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Rahu–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
