How the two grahas get on

Surya and Mangal are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Surya–Mangal period starts; where Surya and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Surya mahadasha is about

standing, authority and the father

Mangal antardasha adds

effort, property and disputes

What it touches in life

Surya–Mangal area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below

AreaWhat the verses give
Work and standingWhen it goes well: gains on every side and a position of command, with victory over opponents and peace of mind; when it is hard: failure in ventures.
Money and propertyWhen it goes well: gains of land, wealth, grain and a house; when it is hard: loss of wealth through the displeasure of those in power.
FamilyWhen it goes well: comfort in the family and a growing circle of brothers and sisters; when it is hard: loss of relatives and disputes with brothers.
HealthWhen it is hard: harshness in conduct and mental illness, with risk of imprisonment, and, when Mangal rules your 2nd or 7th house, illness of mind and body.

For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Surya–Mangal give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 52, verses 15–22

Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Surya’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Surya, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Mangal is exalted (in his sign of greatest strength), in his own sign, or in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house) or a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th house), BPHS gives gains of land, wealth and grain, and the purchase of a house.BPHS 52.15–18
  • When Mangal is joined with the lord of the lagna (the ruler of the ascendant sign), BPHS gives gains on every side, a position of command, victory over opponents, peace of mind, comfort in the family, and a growing circle of brothers and sisters.BPHS 52.15–18

When it is hard

  • When Mangal is in the 8th or 12th from Surya, the lord of the mahadasha, or is joined by malefic grahas (the harsh planets), or is without dignity and strength, BPHS warns of harshness in conduct, mental illness, risk of imprisonment, loss of relatives, disputes with brothers, and failure in ventures.BPHS 52.19–20
  • When Mangal is debilitated (in his sign of weakness) or weak, BPHS warns of loss of wealth through the displeasure of government or those in power.BPHS 52.21–22

Parashara’s remedy

For recovery of health, longer life and success in one's efforts, BPHS prescribes recitation of the Vedas, japa, and the Vrishotsarga rite (dedicating a bull), done in the prescribed manner.

BPHS 52.21–22

A caution: When Mangal rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of illness of mind and body, and asks for care with health. BPHS 52.21–22

Surya–Mangal for your lagna

What Surya and Mangal are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together

Both are favourable for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. Both are hard for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishchik (Scorpio) and towards hard for Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn).

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Surya mahadasha Opens

Surya rules your 11th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — income, gains, elder siblings, and friends who help. Favourable — a kendra or trikona, enough Shadbala and vargottama.

Mangal antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 2 March 2021 – 8 July 2021, at the age of 30. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Mangal: rules your 2nd house and 7th house, sits in your 7th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, strong in its sign and well placed from Surya; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Surya–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Surya mahadasha Mangal antardasha?

4 months 6 days (128 days): Surya’s 6 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 9 months 18 days after a Surya mahadasha starts.

Is Surya mahadasha Mangal antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Surya and Mangal sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. It is hardest for Mithun (Gemini), Tula (Libra), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Surya mahadasha Mangal antardasha?

Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Surya–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 21 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 6 days.

What upay helps in Mangal antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 52.21–22), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Surya–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
