How the two grahas get on

Ketu counts Mangal a friend, and Mangal counts Ketu neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Ketu–Mangal period starts; where Ketu and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings. Texts differ on the friendships of Rahu and Ketu; this is the table the kundli here uses.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 59, verses 37–44

Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Ketu’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Ketu, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Mangal (Mars) is in his exaltation or own sign, or is joined or aspected by benefic grahas, BPHS gives gains of land or property, growth in wealth and livestock, the laying out of a new garden, and gains of wealth through the favour of those in power.BPHS 59.37–39
  • When Mangal (Mars) is connected with the lord of the 9th or 10th house, BPHS says gains of land and enjoyment come without fail.BPHS 59.39
  • When Mangal (Mars) is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th), a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th), or the 3rd or 11th, counted from Ketu, the mahadasha lord, BPHS gives recognition from those in power, great popularity and a good name, and happiness from children and friends.BPHS 59.40

When it is hard

  • When Mangal (Mars) is in the 8th, 12th or 2nd, counted from Ketu, the mahadasha lord, BPHS warns of danger to life or a mishap on a journey abroad, diabetes, needless troubles, danger from thieves and from those in power, and quarrels. Amid these, it says, some good results also come.BPHS 59.41–42

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes giving a bull in charity. It says Mangal's grace then brings enjoyment and gains of property.

BPHS 59.44

A caution: When Mangal rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS treats this as a maraka caution (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of high fever, danger from poison, distress to the spouse, mental anguish and the danger of an untimely death, and asks for care with health. BPHS 59.43–44

Ketu–Mangal for your lagna

What Mangal is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it; Ketu follows the lord of its rashi

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

Ketu rules no house, so no lagna makes it good or bad by lordship: it gives the results of the house it sits in and of the lord of that rashi. Ketu in each house shows how.

From the Janam Kundli report

Ketu mahadasha Mixed

Ketu sits in your 12th house: this period brings its matters forward — spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. A node gives the results of the lord of its sign: here Mangal, which rules your 5th house and 12th house and sits in your 11th house. Mixed — its sign's lord well placed; on the other side: a difficult house.

Mangal antardasha Opens

In this kundli it runs 22 February 2054 – 22 July 2054, at the age of 70. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Mangal: rules your 5th house and 12th house, sits in your 11th house. It brings children, study, and creative work; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Favourable — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona, enough Shadbala and strong in the navamsa; on the other side: at a hard angle from Ketu.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Ketu–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.

Common questions

How long is Ketu mahadasha Mangal antardasha?

4 months 27 days (149 days): Ketu’s 7 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 2 years 6 months 3 days after a Ketu mahadasha starts.

Is Ketu mahadasha Mangal antardasha good or bad?

Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Ketu and Mangal sit in your kundli. Ketu has no lagna of its own to be good or bad for; it gives the results of the lord of the rashi it sits in. Mangal is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Mangal is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Ketu sees Mangal as a friend, and Mangal sees Ketu as neutral. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.

What are the pratyantars of Ketu mahadasha Mangal antardasha?

Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Ketu–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 25 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 7 days.

What upay helps in Mangal antardasha?

Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 59.44), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Ketu–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
