Guru mahadasha is about
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Guru · Mangal
Mangal antardasha in Guru mahadasha runs 11 months 6 days. It is the eighth of the nine and begins 12 years 8 months after the mahadasha starts.
Guru’s 16 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120
11 months 6 days · 341 days
Chandra antardasha comes before it, and Rahu antardasha after it.
Guru and Mangal are friends to each other. That natural relationship is where reading a Guru–Mangal period starts; where Guru and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
growth, children, teachers and blessings
effort, property and disputes
Guru–Mangal area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you succeed in all your ventures and win the pleasure of those in power. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain land, property, wealth and grain; when it is hard: you lose wealth and your house. |
| Family | When it goes well: celebrations such as weddings take place, and you find happiness through spouse and children. |
| Health | When it goes well: your strength and courage grow; when it is hard: you suffer eye trouble, bodily distress and mental anguish, worst at the start and easing later. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Guru–Mangal give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 56, verses 65–71
Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Guru’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Guru, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, and for gains of wealth and property, BPHS prescribes giving a bull in charity.
BPHS 56.69–71A caution: When Mangal rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of bodily distress and mental anguish. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 56.69–71
What Guru and Mangal are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Meen (Pisces) lagna, Parashara names Guru and Mangal together as givers of yoga (34.44): the strongest this pair can be. Both are favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo) lagna. Both are hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishchik (Scorpio), Dhanu (Sagittarius).

One kundli that meets Guru–Mangal at 83, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Guru rules your 3rd house and 6th house and sits in your 9th house: this period brings those matters forward — effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys; illness, debt, disputes, and thankless work. Go carefully — short of Shadbala, in an enemy's sign in the navamsa, in an enemy's sign and combust; on the other side: a kendra or trikona and vargottama.
In this kundli it runs 13 January 2074 – 20 December 2074, from the age of 83 to 84. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Mangal: rules your 2nd house and 7th house, sits in your 7th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, strong in its sign and well placed from Guru; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Vargottama: in the same rashi in the birth chart and in the navamsa, which strengthens a graha. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Combust: so close to the Sun that its strength is lost in the Sun’s rays.
Guru–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal | 20 days | 13 January 2074 – 2 February 2074 | Mixed |
| Rahu | 1 month 23 days | 2 February 2074 – 25 March 2074 | Opens |
| Guru | 1 month 14 days | 25 March 2074 – 9 May 2074 | Mixed |
| Shani | 1 month 23 days | 9 May 2074 – 2 July 2074 | Opens |
| Budh | 1 month 18 days | 2 July 2074 – 20 August 2074 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 19 days | 20 August 2074 – 8 September 2074 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 1 month 27 days | 8 September 2074 – 4 November 2074 | Mixed |
| Surya | 17 days | 4 November 2074 – 21 November 2074 | Opens |
| Chandra | 29 days | 21 November 2074 – 20 December 2074 | Care |

Suggestions for Mangal’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Guru–Mangal a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.69–71), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Daan: red lentils and jaggery, on Tuesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Mangal period: Mangal mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Mangal upay.
11 months 6 days (341 days): Guru’s 16 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 12 years 8 months after a Guru mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Guru and Mangal sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Meen (Pisces) lagna. It is hardest for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna. By nature the two are friends. On the Tula lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Guru–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 1 month 27 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 17 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 56.69–71), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Guru–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
