Shani mahadasha is about
hard work, duty and delay
Shani · Budh
Budh antardasha in Shani mahadasha runs 2 years 8 months 9 days. It is the second of the nine and begins 3 years 3 days after the mahadasha starts.
Shani’s 19 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120
2 years 8 months 9 days · 983 days
Shani antardasha comes before it, and Ketu antardasha after it.
Shani counts Budh a friend, and Budh counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Shani–Budh period starts; where Shani and Budh sit in your kundli decides what it brings.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 57, verses 8–15
Parashara reads Budh’s antardasha in Shani’s mahadasha by where Budh sits, counted from the lagna and from Shani, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles and to enjoy life again, BPHS prescribes reciting the Vishnu Sahasranama (the thousand names of Vishnu) and giving grain in charity.
BPHS 57.14–15A caution: When Budh rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 57.14–15
What Shani and Budh are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Tula (Libra) lagna. Both are hard for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Vrishabh (Taurus), Kanya (Virgo), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius). For Mithun (Gemini) lagna both are neutral, and where Shani and Budh sit decides it.
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) | Budh is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Hard |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Leans favourable |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Placement decides |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Hard |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Hard |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Leans favourable |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Favourable |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Malefic 8th and 11th | Hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Mixed |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Benefic 6th and 9th | Leans favourable |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Leans favourable |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Hard |
“Together” reads Shani and Budh side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Shani–Budh at 34, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Shani rules your 2nd house and 3rd house and sits in your 11th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 24 August 2018 – 3 May 2021, from the age of 34 to 37. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Budh: rules your 7th house and 10th house, sits in your 1st house. It brings the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and well placed from Shani; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Shani–Budh divides into nine pratyantars from Budh’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budh | 4 months 17 days | 24 August 2018 – 10 January 2019 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 1 month 27 days | 10 January 2019 – 9 March 2019 | Care |
| Shukra | 5 months 11 days | 9 March 2019 – 20 August 2019 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 18 days | 20 August 2019 – 8 October 2019 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 2 months 21 days | 8 October 2019 – 29 December 2019 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 26 days | 29 December 2019 – 24 February 2020 | Opens |
| Rahu | 4 months 26 days | 24 February 2020 – 20 July 2020 | Care |
| Guru | 4 months 9 days | 20 July 2020 – 29 November 2020 | Mixed |
| Shani | 5 months 4 days | 29 November 2020 – 3 May 2021 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Budh’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Shani–Budh a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.14–15), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ब्रां ब्रीं ब्रौं सः बुधाय नमः
Daan: green moong and green cloth, on Wednesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Budh period: Budh mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Budh upay.
2 years 8 months 9 days (983 days): Shani’s 19 years × Budh’s 17 years ÷ 120. It begins 3 years 3 days after a Shani mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shani and Budh sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Tula (Libra) lagna. It is hardest for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Meen (Pisces) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Shani sees Budh as a friend, and Budh sees Shani as neutral. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani. Each is Shani–Budh’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 11 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 18 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.14–15), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Budh beej mantra, Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah, and a daan of green moong and green cloth on Wednesday are the everyday upay for Shani–Budh, where your kundli shows the need.
