Budh mahadasha is about
trade, study and the written word
Budh · Mangal
Mangal antardasha in Budh mahadasha runs 11 months 27 days. It is the sixth of the nine and begins 8 years 6 months after the mahadasha starts.
Budh’s 17 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120
11 months 27 days · 362 days
Chandra antardasha comes before it, and Rahu antardasha after it.
Budh counts Mangal neither friend nor enemy (neutral), and Mangal counts Budh an enemy. That natural relationship is where reading a Budh–Mangal period starts; where Budh and Mangal sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
trade, study and the written word
effort, property and disputes
Budh–Mangal area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: a lost position is regained through the favour of those in power; when it is hard: ventures meet obstacles, power turns against you, and you lose your position. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain property, livestock, vehicles, farmland and wealth, with ease often returning in the middle of the period; when it is hard: you lose wealth. |
| Family | When it goes well: a son is born, your spouse brings happiness, and you gain warm ties with relatives; when it is hard: relatives trouble you and you clash with your son. |
| Health | When it goes well: your health is good; when it is hard: you suffer physical distress, mental anguish, gout, wounds, danger from weapons and fire, and fever. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Budh–Mangal give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 58, verses 36–46
Parashara reads Mangal’s antardasha in Budh’s mahadasha by where Mangal sits, counted from the lagna and from Budh, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief, BPHS prescribes the Mahamrityunjaya japa, the mantra to Shiva for health and long life, and giving a cow in charity.
BPHS 58.46A caution: When Mangal rules your 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this a maraka period (one the texts link with danger to life). It warns of the danger of an untimely death and asks for care with health. BPHS 58.45
What Budh and Mangal are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are favourable for Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. For Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Budh is (lord of) | Mangal is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 3rd and 6th | Benefic 1st and 8th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Mildly malefic— lord of the 2nd and 5th, which the verse calls 'somewhat inauspicious' (34.23) and does not name among the killers 2nd and 5th | Maraka 7th and 12th | Leans hard |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Lagna lord— the lagna lord, which the verse leaves unjudged: 34.25 names only Shukra auspicious for Mithun 1st and 4th | Malefic 6th and 11th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Yogakaraka 5th and 10th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Chandra (34.29–30) 2nd and 11th | Yogakaraka 4th and 9th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Shukra (34.32) 1st and 10th | Malefic 3rd and 8th | Mixed |
| Tula (Libra) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Chandra (34.34) 9th and 12th | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 7th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 8th and 11th | Neutral 1st and 6th | Leans hard |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Surya (34.38)— lord of the 7th, but the killers the verse names for this lagna are Shani and Shukra (34.37–38) 7th and 10th | Benefic 5th and 12th | Favourable |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Benefic 6th and 9th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 4th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.39–40) 4th and 11th | Mixed |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Neutral— gives mixed results (34.42) 5th and 8th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 10th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.41–42) 3rd and 10th | Leans hard |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka 4th and 7th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Guru (34.44)— also named a killer, though not one who kills on his own (34.44) 2nd and 9th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Budh and Mangal side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna. “Lagna lord” and “Mildly malefic” are the verse’s own words, neither favourable nor hard, and count as neutral here.
One kundli that meets Budh–Mangal at 59, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Budh rules your 7th house and 10th house and sits in your 1st house: this period brings those matters forward — the spouse, partners, and those one deals with; work, standing, and those senior to you. Mixed — a kendra or trikona; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
In this kundli it runs 20 February 2043 – 17 February 2044, from the age of 59 to 60. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Mangal: rules your 5th house and 12th house, sits in your 11th house. It brings children, study, and creative work; spending, sleep, foreign places, and what is given away. Favourable — a house of wealth or gain, lord of a trikona, well placed from Budh, enough Shadbala and strong in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.
Budh–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mangal | 21 days | 20 February 2043 – 13 March 2043 | Opens |
| Rahu | 1 month 23 days | 13 March 2043 – 6 May 2043 | Care |
| Guru | 1 month 17 days | 6 May 2043 – 23 June 2043 | Mixed |
| Shani | 1 month 28 days | 23 June 2043 – 20 August 2043 | Mixed |
| Budh | 1 month 20 days | 20 August 2043 – 10 October 2043 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 21 days | 10 October 2043 – 31 October 2043 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 2 months | 31 October 2043 – 31 December 2043 | Mixed |
| Surya | 18 days | 31 December 2043 – 18 January 2044 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 30 days | 18 January 2044 – 17 February 2044 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Mangal’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Budh–Mangal a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.46), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ क्रां क्रीं क्रौं सः भौमाय नमः
Daan: red lentils and jaggery, on Tuesday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Mangal period: Mangal mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Mangal upay.
11 months 27 days (362 days): Budh’s 17 years × Mangal’s 7 years ÷ 120. It begins 8 years 6 months after a Budh mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Budh and Mangal sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists it is strongest for Dhanu (Sagittarius) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Budh sees Mangal as neutral, and Mangal sees Budh as an enemy. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Opens”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra. Each is Budh–Mangal’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 2 months, and the shortest Surya’s, about 18 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 58.46), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Mangal beej mantra, Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah, and a daan of red lentils and jaggery on Tuesday are the everyday upay for Budh–Mangal, where your kundli shows the need.
