Shani mahadasha is about
hard work, duty and delay
Shani · Guru
Guru antardasha in Shani mahadasha runs 2 years 6 months 12 days. It is the ninth of the nine and begins 16 years 5 months 18 days after the mahadasha starts.
Shani’s 19 years × Guru’s 16 years ÷ 120
2 years 6 months 12 days · 925 days
Rahu antardasha comes before it, and it closes the mahadasha; Budh mahadasha begins when it ends. The last months of a mahadasha, where one period hands over to the next, are called dasha sandhi (the junction), and the tradition reads them with care.
Shani and Guru are neither friends nor enemies to each other (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Shani–Guru period starts; where Shani and Guru sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
hard work, duty and delay
growth, children, teachers and blessings
Shani–Guru area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you succeed all round, gain respect, name and fame, through those in power; when it is hard: officials turn against you, projects fail, and you lose your position. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain vehicles, jewellery, clothes, good food and wealth through those in power; when it is hard: you lose wealth, even to government fines. |
| Family | When it goes well: your family thrives, and your spouse and children bring happiness; when it is hard: you lose close relatives, quarrel with kinsmen, and your spouse and son suffer. |
| Health | When it is hard: you fall ill, suffer mental anguish, may face imprisonment, and your body and life are in danger. |
| Faith and journeys | When it goes well: you grow devoted to the deities and your guru, keep learned company, and turn to the Vedas, Vedanta, yajnas and charity. |
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 57, verses 71–82
Parashara reads Guru’s antardasha in Shani’s mahadasha by where Guru sits, counted from the lagna and from Shani, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles, BPHS prescribes reciting the Shiva Sahasranama (the thousand names of Shiva) and giving gold in charity.
BPHS 57.81–82A caution: When Guru rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS counts this sub-period maraka (a time the texts link with danger to life). It warns of bodily distress and anguish, and of danger to the life of the person or of a family member. BPHS 57.81–82
What Shani and Guru are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
For Mesh (Aries), Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Tula (Libra), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards hard for Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) | Guru is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th | Benefic 9th and 12th | Mixed |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 8th and 11th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 8th and 11th | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Chandra (34.25–26) 7th and 10th | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th | Benefic 6th and 9th | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Benefic 5th and 8th | Mixed |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.31–32) 4th and 7th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd and 6th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.33–34) 3rd and 6th | Mixed |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Benefic— lord of the 2nd, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Shukra (34.35–36) 2nd and 5th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Neutral— the lagna lord, which the verse calls neutral (34.38) 1st and 4th | Leans hard |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Malefic 3rd and 12th | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Malefic · Maraka 2nd and 11th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Benefic · Yoga— gives yoga together with Mangal (34.44) 1st and 10th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Shani and Guru side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Shani–Guru at 48, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Shani rules your 2nd house and 3rd house and sits in your 11th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 8 February 2032 – 21 August 2034, from the age of 48 to 50. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Guru: rules your 1st house and 4th house, sits in your 1st house. It brings the body, health, temperament and the self; the home, the mother, land and vehicles, and rest. Mixed — a kendra or trikona, strong in its sign and well placed from Shani; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Shani–Guru divides into nine pratyantars from Guru’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guru | 4 months 2 days | 8 February 2032 – 10 June 2032 | Mixed |
| Shani | 4 months 25 days | 10 June 2032 – 4 November 2032 | Mixed |
| Budh | 4 months 11 days | 4 November 2032 – 15 March 2033 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 1 month 23 days | 15 March 2033 – 8 May 2033 | Care |
| Shukra | 5 months 1 day | 8 May 2033 – 9 October 2033 | Mixed |
| Surya | 1 month 15 days | 9 October 2033 – 24 November 2033 | Mixed |
| Chandra | 2 months 16 days | 24 November 2033 – 9 February 2034 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 26 days | 9 February 2034 – 4 April 2034 | Opens |
| Rahu | 4 months 17 days | 4 April 2034 – 21 August 2034 | Care |

Suggestions for Guru’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Shani–Guru a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.81–82), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ ग्रां ग्रीं ग्रौं सः गुरवे नमः
Daan: chana dal and turmeric, on Thursday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Guru period: Guru mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Guru upay.
2 years 6 months 12 days (925 days): Shani’s 19 years × Guru’s 16 years ÷ 120. It begins 16 years 5 months 18 days after a Shani mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shani and Guru sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. By nature the two are neither friends nor enemies. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Rahu. Each is Shani–Guru’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 5 months 1 day, and the shortest Surya’s, about 1 month 15 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.81–82), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Guru beej mantra, Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah, and a daan of chana dal and turmeric on Thursday are the everyday upay for Shani–Guru, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
