What Mangal brings to its own antardasha

Every mahadasha opens with its own lord’s antardasha. For these months Mangal rules both levels alone, so its matters show at their plainest.

What Parashara says

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 54, verses 1–8

Parashara reads Mangal’s own antardasha by where Mangal sits from the lagna and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.

When it goes well

  • When Mangal is in a kendra (the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house), or in the 5th, 9th, 11th, 3rd or 2nd house, or is joined with the lord of the lagna (the ruler of the ascendant sign), BPHS gives gains of wealth through the kindness of those in power, the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, the return of a lost position and of lost wealth, and the birth of a son.BPHS 54.1–2½
  • When Mangal is strong and is exalted (in his sign of greatest strength), in his own sign, or in his own navamsa (his own place in the ninth-division chart), BPHS gives hopes fulfilled through the kindness of those in power, and gains of a house, land and livestock.BPHS 54.3–4

When it is hard

  • When Mangal is in the 8th or 12th house, or is joined with, or receives the drishti (aspect) of, malefic grahas (the harsh planets), BPHS warns of urinary trouble, injuries, and danger from snakes and from those in power.BPHS 54.5–5½

Parashara’s remedy

For relief, BPHS prescribes Rudra japa and giving a red bull in charity; it says Lord Shiva then restores health and brings wealth and happiness.

BPHS 54.6–8

A caution: When Mangal rules your 2nd or 7th house (the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life), BPHS warns of mental anguish and bodily pain, and asks for care with health. BPHS 54.6–8

Mangal’s own antardasha for your lagna

What Mangal is for each lagna, as Parashara lists it

Mangal is favourable for Mesh (Aries), Kark (Cancer), Singh (Leo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna. Mangal is hard for Vrishabh (Taurus), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Tula (Libra), Makar (Capricorn), Kumbh (Aquarius) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishchik (Scorpio) lagna Mangal is neutral, and where it sits decides the period.

The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:

  • Yogakaraka: the strongest graha a lagna can have: the one Parashara names as bringing yoga, or the one lord of both a kendra (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and a trikona (1st, 5th, 9th) (34.13)
  • Benefic, Malefic, Neutral: works for the lagna; brings its harder matters; neither
  • Lagna lord: the lagna’s own graha, where the verse calls it neither good nor hard
  • Maraka: a killer Parashara names for the lagna, watched for health and longevity; printed alone, or after another label. It is not always the lord of the 2nd or 7th: where it differs, the line under it gives the verse
  • · Yoga: one of two grahas he says give yoga together for this lagna

From the Janam Kundli report

Mangal mahadasha Mixed

Mangal rules your 2nd house and 7th house and sits in your 7th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Mixed — a kendra or trikona and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and in an enemy's sign in the navamsa.

Mangal antardasha Mixed

In this kundli it runs 14 May 2036 – 10 October 2036, from the age of 45 to 46. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.

Mangal: rules your 2nd house and 7th house, sits in your 7th house. It brings the money at hand, the family, and speech; the spouse, partners, and those one deals with. Read as Mangal mahadasha above: its own sub-period.

Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength.

Its nine pratyantars

Mangal–Mangal divides into nine pratyantars from Mangal’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
