Shani mahadasha is about
hard work, duty and delay
Shani · Chandra
Chandra antardasha in Shani mahadasha runs 1 year 7 months. It is the sixth of the nine and begins 10 years 11 months 3 days after the mahadasha starts.
Shani’s 19 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120
1 year 7 months · 578 days
Surya antardasha comes before it, and Mangal antardasha after it.
Shani counts Chandra an enemy, and Chandra counts Shani neither friend nor enemy (neutral). That natural relationship is where reading a Shani–Chandra period starts; where Shani and Chandra sit in your kundli decides what it brings.
hard work, duty and delay
the mind, the mother and the home
Shani–Chandra area by area, in plain words, from Parashara’s verses set out below
| Area | What the verses give |
|---|---|
| Work and standing | When it goes well: you find happiness through your employer; when it is hard: you lose your position and face more enemies. |
| Money and property | When it goes well: you gain vehicles, garments, jewellery, more livestock and better fortune; when it is hard: you lose comforts and suffer losses in business, though the very start still brings some gain. |
| Family | When it goes well: you care for your brothers and find happiness with kinsmen, parents and spouse; when it is hard: you are parted from parents, your children fall ill, and kinsmen turn against you. |
| Health | When it is hard: you feel great distress, anger, sleepiness and lethargy, eat at odd hours, need medicines, and feel unwell in body. |
For faith and journeys, Parashara’s verses on Shani–Chandra give nothing of their own; there the two grahas’ places in your kundli decide.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 57, verses 43–54
Parashara reads Chandra’s antardasha in Shani’s mahadasha by where Chandra sits, counted from the lagna and from Shani, and by what it rules; your kundli shows which line is yours, and though the text speaks of a man, its results apply to anyone.
For relief from these troubles and for a longer life, BPHS prescribes a havan (sacred fire offering), and giving in charity jaggery, ghee, rice mixed with curd, and a cow or a female buffalo.
BPHS 57.53–54A caution: When Chandra rules the 2nd or 7th house, BPHS warns of lethargy and distress to the body. The 2nd and 7th are the maraka houses, which the texts link with danger to life. BPHS 57.53–54
What Shani and Chandra are for each lagna, as Parashara lists them, and the two read together
Both are hard for Singh (Leo) lagna, where the period asks for the most care. For Vrishabh (Taurus), Kark (Cancer), Vrishchik (Scorpio), Kumbh (Aquarius), Meen (Pisces) lagna one is good and the other hard, so the period is mixed. Where one of the two is neutral, the other decides the lean: towards good for Tula (Libra) and towards hard for Mesh (Aries), Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Makar (Capricorn).
The labels, from Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, chapter 34:
| Lagna | Shani is (lord of) | Chandra is (lord of) | Together |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mesh (Aries) | Malefic 10th and 11th | Neutral 4th | Leans hard |
| Vrishabh (Taurus) | Yogakaraka 9th and 10th | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 3rd only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.23–24) 3rd | Mixed |
| Mithun (Gemini) | Neutral 8th and 9th | Maraka 2nd | Leans hard |
| Kark (Cancer) | Maraka 7th and 8th | Benefic 1st | Mixed |
| Singh (Leo) | Malefic · Maraka 6th and 7th | Maraka— lord of the 12th only, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.29–30) 12th | Hard |
| Kanya (Virgo) | Neutral 5th and 6th | Malefic 11th | Leans hard |
| Tula (Libra) | Yogakaraka 4th and 5th | Neutral · Yoga— gives yoga together with Budh (34.34) 10th | Leans favourable |
| Vrishchik (Scorpio) | Malefic 3rd and 4th | Yogakaraka— as the verse names it, together with Surya, the 10th lord (34.35–36) 9th | Mixed |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | Maraka 2nd and 3rd | Neutral 8th | Leans hard |
| Makar (Capricorn) | Neutral— the lagna lord; not a killer on his own, the verse says (34.39) 1st and 2nd | Malefic— lord of the 7th, but the killer the verse names for this lagna is Mangal (34.39–40) 7th | Leans hard |
| Kumbh (Aquarius) | Benefic— the lagna lord, and one the verse itself names auspicious for Kumbh (34.41) 1st and 12th | Malefic 6th | Mixed |
| Meen (Pisces) | Malefic · Maraka— lord of the 11th and 12th, not the 2nd or 7th; the verse names it a killer all the same (34.43–44) 11th and 12th | Benefic 5th | Mixed |
“Together” reads Shani and Chandra side by side: both favourable is Favourable; one favourable and one neutral, Leans favourable; one each way, Mixed; one hard and one neutral, Leans hard; both hard, Hard; both neutral, Placement decides. A Yoga pair is two grahas Parashara names together for that lagna.
One kundli that meets Shani–Chandra at 42, read the way the report reads yours
From the Janam Kundli report
Shani rules your 2nd house and 3rd house and sits in your 11th house: this period brings those matters forward — the money at hand, the family, and speech; effort, courage, younger siblings and short journeys. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain and strong in its sign; on the other side: short of Shadbala and debilitated in the navamsa.
In this kundli it runs 25 July 2026 – 23 February 2028, from the age of 42 to 44. Its length here can differ from the one above by a day, because each kundli’s dates round to the day.
Chandra: rules your 8th house, sits in your 11th house. It brings hidden matters, delay, and other people's money. Mixed — a house of wealth or gain; on the other side: short of Shadbala.
Shadbala: the six-fold measure of a graha’s strength the report computes; “short of Shadbala” means below the strength the texts ask of it. Navamsa: the ninth-division chart, read for a graha’s inner strength. Debilitated: in its sign of fall, where a graha is weakest.
Shani–Chandra divides into nine pratyantars from Chandra’s own on. Each length is counted between the dates beside it, and comes out the same in any kundli give or take a day; the dates and readings are this one’s.
| Pratyantar | Length | In this kundli | The report reads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chandra | 1 month 17 days | 25 July 2026 – 11 September 2026 | Mixed |
| Mangal | 1 month 4 days | 11 September 2026 – 15 October 2026 | Opens |
| Rahu | 2 months 25 days | 15 October 2026 – 9 January 2027 | Care |
| Guru | 2 months 18 days | 9 January 2027 – 27 March 2027 | Mixed |
| Shani | 3 months | 27 March 2027 – 27 June 2027 | Mixed |
| Budh | 2 months 21 days | 27 June 2027 – 17 September 2027 | Mixed |
| Ketu | 1 month 4 days | 17 September 2027 – 21 October 2027 | Mixed |
| Shukra | 3 months 4 days | 21 October 2027 – 25 January 2028 | Mixed |
| Surya | 29 days | 25 January 2028 – 23 February 2028 | Mixed |

Suggestions for Chandra’s months, which your kundli confirms
Parashara gives Shani–Chandra a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.53–54), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”; it comes first.
ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चन्द्राय नमः
Daan: rice and white cloth, on Monday
What helps and what to keep clear of in any Chandra period: Chandra mahadasha. Its vrat, ratna, stotra and puja: Chandra upay.
1 year 7 months (578 days): Shani’s 19 years × Chandra’s 10 years ÷ 120. It begins 10 years 11 months 3 days after a Shani mahadasha starts.
Not in advance: it turns on your lagna and on where Shani and Chandra sit in your kundli. By Parashara’s lists no lagna has both lords favourable. It is hardest for Singh (Leo) lagna. By nature the friendship is uneven: Shani sees Chandra as an enemy, and Chandra sees Shani as neutral. On the Dhanu lagna kundli above, the Janam Kundli report reads it as “Mixed”, as its chip above says.
Nine, in the order Chandra, Mangal, Rahu, Guru, Shani, Budh, Ketu, Shukra, Surya. Each is Shani–Chandra’s length × the pratyantar lord’s years ÷ 120, so the longest is Shukra’s, about 3 months 4 days, and the shortest Surya’s, about 29 days.
Parashara gives this antardasha a remedy of its own (BPHS 57.53–54), set out above under “Parashara’s remedy”. The Chandra beej mantra, Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah, and a daan of rice and white cloth on Monday are the everyday upay for Shani–Chandra, where your kundli shows the need.
It follows from the Moon’s nakshatra at your birth. Enter your birth details and the whole 120-year timeline comes with it, each period read for your chart.
